Over 200,000 people were tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, Florida health officials say.

The latest state numbers show 10,059 more coronavirus infections on Sunday, making the current number of cases stand at 200,111.

The highest number of confirmed cases in a day was on Saturday when more than 11,400 cases were reported.

That means one in every 112 people is infected, reported Tampa Bay Times.

As of Sunday, about 731 people have died of the virus. On Sunday alone, the state health department reported 29 additional deaths.

Around 43 percent of the deaths came from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, said a report from Fox News.

This is not the first time Florida health officials reported an increase of more than 10,000 single-day coronavirus infections in the state.

The highest recorded so far was on Saturday at over 11,000.

The death count in Florida is the ninth highest in the country. It is also the 27th highest number of deaths per capita: 17.4 deaths per 100,000 people.

Florida also ranks second in the country for new cases per capita.

How Are Counties Dealing with the Virus?

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez called the high numbers "extremely worrisome" during a Sunday appearance on ABC News' "This Week."

He said it is clear the numbers are growing exponentially.

For the Fourth of July weekend, the county closed down its beaches in hopes of having a "positive impact".

"It takes a little bit of time to find out, exactly, but we're obviously very closely monitoring hospitalizations and we're very closely monitoring the death rate," Suarez said.

According to him, they are given the impression that they have to take stricter measures.

On CBS News' Face the Nation on Sunday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said the people may have "let their guard down" around late May or early June.

"The virus is not harmless," he stressed.

Gimenez said young people are fueling the increase in coronavirus cases.

He noted a rapid rise in young people testing positive of the virus around mid-June.

"I think that that had a lot to do with probably socializing, young kids going to parties, maybe graduation parties at homes," he said.

Even with the surge in cases, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis refused to issue a statewide mask mandate.

DeSantis said he plans to keep Florida open for business, even if full reopening takes longer than expected.

The median age of coronavirus cases in Florida dropped recently, from mid- to late-50s to the early and mid-30s.

On Sunday, the median age was 39.

Coronavirus Cases in the Nation

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recorded about 130,000 deaths from the coronavirus in the US.

The number of infection had already increased to over 2.8 million.

Florida is not the only state in the U.S. that has experienced a great increase in coronavirus cases.

Other states also recorded high numbers recently, particularly Arizona, Texas, and California.

A surge of coronavirus infections is experienced in these states, forcing governors to roll back reopening plans.

On Sunday the following new cases were recorded: 3,536 in Arizona, 5,410 in California and 3,449 in Texas, said a report from NPR.
