The Things People Do for Love: Florida Woman Works As Dishwasher So She Could Visit Husband With Alzheimer
When you love somebody, you will do anything to be with that person. Not even the deadliest virus, not the strictest lockdown, could ever kill true love. That is true for a Florida woman who took the job as a dishwasher at the Florida Memory Care Unit to visit her husband every day.
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida issued an emergency order in March that prohibits visitations to nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care facilities due to the increasing number of COVID-19 infections.
This week, the emergency order is extended for another 60 days. Only members of the family and friends of those in the end-life circumstances are exempted and are allowed to visit the nursing homes.
However, this did not stop a Florida woman from visiting her husband in the state's memory care unit. Mary Daniel used to visit her husband every day in the memory care unit, but because of the Governor's order, she might not visit her husband for days.
Just to be with her husband every day, she took the job as the memory care unit's dishwasher. Her 66-year-old husband was in the facility because he has Alzheimer's disease. When the job was offered to her, she did not hesitate and immediately accepted it to be with her husband every day.
In an interview with her by CNN News, she said that she's going to be the best dishwasher, and needs the job because she wants to be with her husband. She was thrilled when she learned that she can see her husband now after 114 days.
Mary Daniel used to get ready her husband for bed each night, and they would watch TV together before she tucked him into sleep. This was before COVID-19.
She said: "That was our set routine and then all of a sudden I'm gone, and he doesn't know why. He can't understand why."
The Florida woman said that they tried to window-visit him, but her husband, Steve, got upset. Mary Daniel said that Steve couldn't carry on conversations. This means that visiting him over FaceTime did not work as well for them.
Mary Daniel also shared that she is scrubbing dishes, mopping the floors, and cleaning the kitchen just like any dishwasher. After her work, that's the time that she gets to see her husband.
Before she started working as a dishwasher in the memory unit, she went into different tests such as for COVID-19, TB test, drug test, and including a 20-hour video training. She described it as totally legit. She added that she is going to use her paychecks to do something beautiful for the staff.
She started working in the memory unit since July 3, and the most romantic part is Steve can recognize her even if she is wearing a mask.
Steve calls her name every time she walks into his room, and she's happy about what's going on right now. Steve is far more relaxed.
"So when he said, Mary, and gave me the biggest hug, I mean, we both cried,' Mary Daniel said. She also said that he even hugged her during her recent shift.
She said that Steve came up from behind her and put his arms around her. For Mary, even if Steve has Alzheimer's disease, he can still remember her. She also asserted that there is no question about it because Steve can even recognize her even if she is wearing a mask. Mary and Steve Daniel show that memory may be lost but the feeling that you have for each other never will.
