‘Glee’ Creators Pay Tribute to Naya Rivera With Vow to Set Up College Fund for Her Son Josey
Naya Rivera may have passed away, but her son Josey Hollis will always be part of the 'Glee' family. The show's creators made sure of this as they vow to set up a college fund for Josey.
Rivera played the role of "Santana Lopez" in the hit TV show 'Glee.'
She went missing Wednesday after renting a boat with Josey on Lake Piru in Southern California and was later declared dead when her body was found Monday.
The 'Glee' team's promise to set up a college fund for Josey was their way of paying tribute to Rivera.
The showrunners loved her
The 'Glee' co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan described the late actress as a "joy to write for, a joy to direct and a joy to be around" reported NBC News.
The three producers recalled that when they first cast Rivera in the show's pilot, she didn't have many lines. But it didn't take long for them to realize they landed upon a talented actress.
The creators also said they remember Rivera as a dynamic woman and a "real pro," said an ABCreport.
The team noted that Rivera could act, dance, and sing. "Could she ever sing!" they said.
Rivera could also deliver a joke just as well as she could deal with an emotional scene. Her acting was very versatile, and it was easy for her to move from "scary tough" to "deeply vulnerable."
Naya's true 'Glee' legacy
The team recognized the singer-actress' best performances during the series run, like her "Rumor Has It/Someone Like You" Adele mashup, "Valerie," and "Songbird" numbers. But what Murphy, Falchuk, and Brennan honestly thought as Rivera's legacy was her stint as Santana Lopez.
"Her greatest Glee legacy is probably the humor and humanity that she brought to Santana's relationship with her best friend and eventually girlfriend/wife Brittany (played by Heather Morris),"
They noted that the appearance of Santana on-screen was one of the first times an openly lesbian high school relationship was seen on network TV. "Naya understood what 'Brittana' meant to the many young women who saw themselves represented on television for the first time," they said.
According to the showrunners, Naya made sure the relationship Santana had with Brittany was done with "dignity, strength and pure intentions."
They recalled how girls would often reach out to Rivera to tell her how much the on-screen romance meant to them.
She also didn't have any problem with the "mouthfuls of dialogue" they gave her. It was something many of her castmates noted as well. She can learn and recall her lines on the spot.
Co-stars offered support to the family
Many of the former 'Glee' co-stars also vowed to look after the 4-year-old Josey, reported ET Online.
In Amber Riley's emotional tribute, she told Rivera that her family would "never have to worry about anything."
Jenna Ushkowitz also wrote, "You are so loved. You deserved the world, and we will make sure Josey and your family feel that every day."
Harry Shum Jr. also echoed his co-stars, saying they will make sure to keep Rivera's "legacy and spirit alive," so her son will grow up knowing the incredible woman she was.
Kevin McHale also added, "I'm thankful he will have a strong family around him to protect him and tell him about his incredible mom."
Love and condolences to the family continue to pour from all parts of Hollywood, but it can be assured that Rivera's life will be honored the most by the beloved musical series.
