Actor Johnny Ortiz Charged With Attempted Murder
Johnny Ortiz, a Latino actor who starred in 'El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,' is at a terrible place right now as he faces attempted murder charges.
Ortiz is defending with Armando Miguel Navarro and is accused of attempted murder against Brian Duke. According to Fox News, the 24-year-old Ortiz and 18-year-old Navarro are facing a premeditated attempted murder charge.
According to TMZ, the legal documents said the duo tried to kill Duke "for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members."
Ortiz is held on bail worth $1.1 million while Navarro's bail is worth $2 million.
They both went to court in downtown Los Angeles on Monday morning for the said charges. They are being held in custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
It is said that Navarro pulled the trigger on Duke, but it isn't clear what Ortiz's role in the attempted murder is.
A preliminary hearing for both of them is set for September 22, reported Deadline.
Ortiz Pleaded 'Not Guilty'
If Ortiz was found guilty of the crime, he will be looking at 25 years in prison to a life sentence under the California Penal Code, reported Entertainment Weekly.
The May 27 complaint said the actor would face additional sentences that lead to a decade more in prison.
On the other hand, Navarro can also face life in prison if found guilty.
His Family Claims He's Innocent
Ortiz's family claims he is not guilty of the attempted murder.
They are setting up a crowdsourcing page to fund for the actor's bail. When the GoFundMe was set up, the family insists that Ortiz is "in jail fighting for his case that he is innocent on."
The GoFundMe post reads: "Johnny is everything to our family. Johnny does everything to help the community and the Hispanic community, especially."
The page also stated that Ortiz had made contributions to many non-profit organizations and communities.
"We want our beloved family member back with us," the page reads. It went on saying they lost their mother to cancer, and losing Ortiz "breaks their heart."
As of Monday afternoon, the crowdfunding page has raised $780, a far cry from the $100,000 goal.
Ortiz's legal counsel did not respond to request for comment about the actor's situation.
Besides El Camino, the actor was also seen in his role alongside Kevin Costner in 'McFarland, USA,' a feel-good Disney movie. He also made an appearance in the 2018 thriller film 'Peppermint' that starred Jennifer Garner.
He started his career with a part in 'Ali'; a Michael Mann/Will Smith led biopic. He also played a role in ABC TV series American Crime.
The charge is still at its early stages in the overall process. There is likely to be more information to learn as the matter goes through the proper legal channels in the coming days.
