COVID-19 Outbreak in White House as 34 People Test Positive for Coronavirus
Thirty-four staffers and "other contacts" of the White House have contracted the coronavirus in recent days, said a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) memo.
According to a report from ABC News, there were 10 more people detected with the coronavirus from the initial 24 White House staffers.
The nature of the White House's "other contacts" was not disclosed in the memo. An unnamed top adviser to the president was among those who caught the coronavirus, said the memo.
Even though the adviser was not named, recent news showed that Stephen Miller and Hope Hicks tested positive for the virus, noted The Hill. Hicks tested positive last week while Miller was announced positive on Tuesday evening.
The memo was dated Wednesday and was distributed among senior leaders at FEMA. The new numbers illustrate the concerning outbreak happening in the White House.
Known White House Coronavirus Cases
So far, some of Trump's closest aides have contracted the virus. This includes press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and some members of her staff.
His wife, Melania Trump, also tested positive for the virus. According to an earlier statement from Trump, his wife is feeling well despite her infection.
She is recovering from home and is not suffering from severe symptoms.
Former adviser Kellyanne Conway also contracted the virus. News of other cases in Trump's inner circle is yet to come up.
Trump's Travels
Trump's coronavirus diagnosis came two days after his debate with rival presidential candidate Joe Biden. But Biden tested negative for the disease, said The Guardian in a report.
All of Trump's travels in the week before his diagnosis led to high scrutiny. These events include the Rose Garden event announcing the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett.
During that gathering, about 150 people sat close together without a face mask. People who attended the ceremony have also been tested for the virus.
Trump's Coronavirus Treatment
Trump was taken to Walter Reed Military Medical Center on Friday. He was tested positive since news of Hicks' positive test came up.
Trump was released from hospital care by Monday evening. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation, Trump has to be in quarantine for 14 days.
He was seen working from the Oval Office on Wednesday.
Upon his arrival at the White House, Trump removed his face covering before entering the building. He received criticism for this move.
People grew concerned that the string of coronavirus cases could put White House staffers and other workers in the complex at risk, The Independent said in a report.
On Tuesday, White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah said the White House is practicing some safety measures. They're hoping to stop the spread of the virus so that those in the complex may "feel comfortable."
Staffers are still scrambling to work around the White House and have been working at close proximity.
Many staffers also appear to not wear masks within the premises.
More than 200,000 people have already been killed by the coronavirus and reported cases have reached over 7.5 million.
