Juventus' Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo Tests Positive for Coronavirus
Cristiano Ronaldo, a highest-profile athlete, tested positive for COVID-19.
On Tuesday, The Portuguese Football Federation announced that the Juventus superstar was positive for the coronavirus while playing for the national team.
According to Yahoo Sports, in Sunday's scoreless UEFA Nations League match against France, Ronaldo played for Portugal for all the 90-minutes game.
The athlete will miss their country's next Nation League Game against Sweden on Wednesday. The contest is expected to proceed according to the schedule, as of this writing.
It is still undetermined when and where Ronaldo got the virus. However, he joined up with the Portuguese squad right after two Juve staffers returned as they were confirmed positive tests for COVID-19.
Before Ronaldo left Turin to join up with his international teammates, he tested negative, as per the Italian club. The forward also started for Portugal in last week's friendly game against Spain prior to facing France, the reigning World Cup champion.
Ronaldo, 35, won't be available for Juve's Series A tilt on Saturday against Crotone, aside from being ruled out of Wednesday's match. Next week, he would also be expected to sit out Juve's Champions League group on their stage opener against Dynamo Kieve, based on public health protocols, reported by CBC.
Cristiano Rolando joins Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the list of global soccer stars who have been positive for COVID-19.
Top athletes in other sports, such as Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, and Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant, also made their diagnosis public.
As per Yahoo Sports, it keeps the athletes' names that have COVID-19 unless the person confirms the news. In the press release revealing the report, the Portuguese Federation said:
"Cristiano Ronaldo was released from the national team after a positive test for COVID-19." It added that Ronaldo is in isolation and symptom-free.On Tuesday morning, the remaining players underwent new tests following the positive case. All had a negative result, as per the federation.
The Sun reported that Ronaldo was spotted late Tuesday, giving a thumbs-up and smiling from his room at Portugal squad's training base where he is currently self-isolating.
Ronaldo watched his teammates train as they prepared for their match against Sweden. The Juventus star demanded a new test by a different laboratory. Rui Pedro Braz, a Portuguese sports analyst, believes that Rolando took the fourth test after two 'Gold Standard' tested positive for COVID-19.
Rolando is expected to return to Turin to continue self-isolation if he tested positive for COVID-19 a third time, Portugal reports. But the 35-year-old athlete would be taken to Lisbon Airport to board a private place in an ambulance. The action is part of a strict protocol on the movement of people with COVID-19.
It is understood that Ronaldo was forced to scrap plans to be with his mother, Dolores, for the second time only in almost six months. Ronaldo's mother traveled to Lisbon to see her daughter Katia and expected to catch up with son Cristiano before his positive test.
