Fact Check: Did Trump Watch Live Streams of Capitol Riot From a Private Party Nearby
President Donald Trump and his close associates allegedly held a private party near the U.S. Capitol to watch live footage of rioters breaking into the federal building. This claim is only partly true.
The said footage of President Trump had already circulated on the internet, specifically on YouTube and Twitter.
The Capitol riot has been a violent event led by right-wing extremists in light of President Trump's loss in the recent election. There were deaths, arrests, injuries, and damages brought by the controversial Capitol riot.
But footage of President Trump merely watching all of this chaos in a private party only had part of the truth, said a report from Snopes.
President Trump Was Not Watching Ongoing Capitol Riot in Viral Footage
The footage was taken on Jan. 6 by the president's son, Donald Trump Jr. It showed President Trump's inner circle smiling and watching television screens at the Ellipse Park near the White House. It was recorded about one hour before the breach in the Capitol.
Trump Jr. recorded himself with a front-face camera as "Gloria" by Laura Branigan played in the background. He called the protesters "awesome patriots" who were "sick of the bulls---."
"Love to see them getting closer 'cause I think it'd be pretty awesome, but this is pretty incredible," he noted. He then flipped the camera to show a group of people standing around several screens with a crowd of supporters.
As opposed to the claim, President Trump was not watching his supporters breach and vandalize the Capitol live. Instead, it showed a crowd of supporters gathering in front of a stage where the president would speak later on.
In short, it was not showing shots from the Capitol riot as it was happening. It was only showing a hyped-up crowd moment before President Trump addressed supporters in Ellipse Park.
Nonetheless, the footage was criticized online for what was tagged as a "premeditated" demeanor from the Trump family, reported Yahoo! News. Snopes verified that the video was indeed authentic. However, it may have been taken out of context by several people.
President Trump Accused of Promoting Capitol Riot
The footage came out amid reports that President Trump helped in planning and promoting the Capitol riot. An ABC News report cited the president speaking at the "March to Save America," where he urged his supporters to storm the Capitol to protest the Electoral College results.
He told the crowd that he would be part of the rally but did not do so. He also pushed his claims that the election results were a result of widespread voter fraud.
"You'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength," he told the crowd.
In another report by The Washington Post, it said the president refused to recognize his role in inciting the Capitol riot, and one aide described his behavior on Wednesday as "a total monster."
On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump condemned the violence that ensued in the Capitol and urged protesters to support police and law enforcement.
"Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!" he tweeted. Later on, he also urged supporters to "go home in peace."
President Trump's Twitter account has been suspended permanently from its platform due to the "risk of further incitement of violence," said reports.
