The officers went to the scene upon receiving a 911 call, reporting that a female was trying to stab them.
When the police arrived at the 3100 block of Legion Lane located north of Chatterton Road at around 4:45 p.m, a cop shot the teenage girl, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Nobody else was injured.
Before the shooting, officials said the responding cops were attempting to break up a fight. Hazel Bryant, the aunt of Ma'Khia Bryant, told The Dispatch that the teen lived in a foster home on Legion Lane and got into an altercation with someone else inside the home.
Hazel Bryant noted that her niece brandished a knife to defend herself, but she dropped the weapon before being shot four times by a cop.
The Columbus Fire medics rushed the wounded teen to Mount Carmel East Hospital. But at around 5:21 p.m., the girl was pronounced dead, New York Daily News reported.
In a tweet, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther noted that there is body-worn camera footage, and they will review it as soon as possible.

Ohio Shooting Sparks Demonstration
The aunt of the Ohio teenager disclosed that the victim had called 911 because she was being abused. She added that Ma'Khia Bryant did not deserve to die "like a dog in the street."
The victim's mother, Paula Bryant, told WBNS that her daughter was an honor roll student.
The incident has sparked a demonstration. Almost 50 protesters, with some holding Black Lives Matter signs, arrived at the crime scene at around 8:30 p.m. They were reportedly chanting "Black Lives Matter" and "no justice, no peace."
"We're not going to sit here and just sit around while you kill us," a protester told The Dispatch. Apart from the crime scene, some protesters also appeared outside the Columbus Police headquarters.
The Columbus mayor noted that they still do not know the complete details of the shooting incident. Ginther said that they would immediately share any information as soon as it becomes available.
In a late-night press conference, Ginther noted that based on this footage, the police officer took action to protect another young girl in the community. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now leading the investigation into the case.
