Darren Young, WWE Star, Comes Out as Gay
WWE star Darren Young became the latest American professional athlete to come out, and he didn't even plan it.
TMZ caught up with Young as he was standing near the baggage carousel at LAX and just asked him about if a gay wrestler would be accepted.
"Absolutely," Young said as he leaned on his baggage during the impromptu interview. "Look at me. I'm a WWE Superstar and, to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay, and I'm happy. Very happy."
"I guess if you want to call it 'coming out,' I really don't know what to say it is," he continued. "I'm just letting you know that I'm happy [with] who I am, I'm comfortable with myself, and I'm happy to be living the dream ... Some people might not like it. Some people will like it. I'm here to please myself. I'm here to be happy ... I'm hoping to make a difference. It's very important to me to make people understand that someone's sexual preference shouldn't matter. It should be about the person."
The 33-year-old is the latest to come out in a year that has seen several coming out stories by professional athletes. Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers came out earlier this year, although their coming out stories were nowhere near as candid as Young's.
Acceptance is growing for LGBT people in sport, and these coming out stories reflect that. Every corner of society has supported the athletes, and Young's example was no different as WWE released a statement to The Huffington Post earlier today.
"WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation."
Young began his wrestling career in 2002.
