Off-Broadway Play 'Los Monólogos de la Vagina' Closes Early: Spanish Version of 'The Vagina Monologues' Lasted Just 48 Shows
On Monday producers of "Los Monólogos de la Vagina," the Spanish language version of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," announced the play's early closing because of poor ticket sales.
The last show took place on Sunday at the Westside Theatre in New York City. The Off-Broadway play began performances on May 6 and opened officially on May 18, according to Playbill. The show is ending after a mere 15 preview and 33 regular performances.
"We are proud to have presented this production at the original New York City home of 'The Vagina Monologues,'" Morris Gilbert and Federico González Compeán, the play's producers, said in a statement. "Even with positive notices and enthusiastic audiences, the show is not attracting the numbers needed to make this economically viable. We hope to announce plans to bring the production to other U.S. cities."
The final cast starred Daphne Rubin-Vega, a Tony Award-nominated actress and the original Mimi of "Rent," Maria Cellario ("The Royal Family") and Liz Perez ("The House that will not Stand").
Because of the show's early end, additional Spanish-speaking celebrities will not be seen in their limited-time performances. This include Judy Reyes ("Devious Maids," "Scrubs"), who was scheduled to join the cast on June 24, Ana Maria, the "Caso Cerrado" host who was scheduled to perform starting July 22, and Andrea Legarreta ("Hoy"), who was going to take the stage on July 29.
Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" held 1,381 performances at the same Westside Theatre from 1999-2003, Playbill reported. According to the The New York Times, "Los Monólogos de la Vagina" is enjoying better success in Mexico City, where it has run for 14 years.
Just recently, Rubin-Vega spoke about what her first all-Spanish language gig meant.
"Each audience is a wave. You catch them, and you ride them all the way ... to have that journey," she told Latina magazine. "I think this experience will inform so much about my life and my identity as a Latin woman that I am not even aware of right now."
