Democrat Melanie Stansbury Wins U.S. House Election Race in New Mexico, Now Filling Interior Secretary Haaland's Seat
With her campaign similar to the initiatives of the Biden administration, Democrat Melanie Stansbury won House Election Race in New Mexico on Tuesday, June 1.
Democrats' Domination
Stansbury prevailed in an open, four-way race to fill the vacant seat previously held by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
According to Fox News, the 42-year-old New Mexico native Melanie Stansbury linked her bid to Congress to the proposed and enacted Democratic legislation on pandemic relief, infrastructure spending, and interventions to slowing down climate change. The victory of Stansbury adds up to the increasing Democratic majority in Congress ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
Moreover, while celebrating her victory, Stansbury strode on stage in Albuquerque with her both arms raised. She then thanked her supporters and volunteers who were by her side throughout the campaign. She also added that it is the determination and grit that she learned from her mother that fueled her campaign. Her mother worked in a denim factory before she served as a crane mechanic.
In addition, Stansbury emphasized that when the moment families, communities, and country demands her to step up, she will step up in finding solutions for communities and continue to figure it out. Stansbury also added that it is exactly what they did during the campaign period and it is also the reason why she's standing before them.
Furthermore, the victory of Stansbury preserves the all-female lineup of New Mexico in their House delegation. The New Mexican native defeated third-term Republican state Senator Mark Moores to fill an Albuquerque-based seat that has been held by Democrats since 2009.

Meanwhile, the campaigns of Libertarian nominee Chris Manning and independent Aubrey Dunn Jr. to represent the 1st Congressional District of NM went unsuccessfully. The 1st Congressional District of New Mexico encompasses Albuquerque, rural Torrance County, and other outlying areas, including the Indigenous community of Sandia Pueblo.
The election winner also reiterated that she will be pushing the $15 minimum wage, racial and economic equality, and police reforms that currently impact the country the most. She also mentioned that there is a lot of work that needs to be done and she wants to give everyone a seat at the table while the country, along with its economy, is rebuilding, CBS News reported.
During the Election Day voting, Stansbury emphasized the importance of major federal infrastructure spending. She added that it is so important especially for New Mexico because it includes funding for projects for clean energy and broadband.
In recent years, the voters in the 1st Congressional district of NM heavily favored candidates from Democrats. Voters reelected Haaland with a margin of 16 percentage points as voter participation reached an all-time high while shunning former President Donald Trump with a gap of 23 percentage points in 2020.
Tuesday's election is among a handful of races that needs to be done to fill vacancies in Congress ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. Right now, Democrats held a 219-211 majority in Congress going into Tuesday's vote in the state, NBC News reported.
