After one of the largest anti-government demonstrations in the history of Cuba, officials across the state of Florida on Sunday voiced their opposition to the Cuban authoritarian regime experienced by the island.

Showing their support for Cubans, Tampa citizens also hit the streets on Sunday to protest against food shortages and economic hardship experienced by the people of Cuba, placing the blame on the leadership in the country.

According to WFLA, Mayor Jane Castor said that Tampa stood with the brave people of Cuba because their ancestors also helped Tampa in building its community. Castor added that the fight of Cubans for freedom and against repression is all of their fights.

Also, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis voiced his support for Cuban protests on social media. DeSantis condemned the "tyrannical regime" in Havana. The state of Florida has the largest population of Cuban-Americans in the U.S.

Following the post of Gov. DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez stated during a press conference in Surfside that the governor was monitoring the situation in Cuba. Nunez added that the next few days would be pivotal for the people of Cuba, as they attempt to finish their decades-long quest for freedom. The lieutenant governor also shared that officials would continue to actively monitor the situation and emphasized that they were prepared for any impacts that would be brought by the situation, Tampa Bay Times reported.

The Chief Financial Officer of Florida, Jimmy Patronis also issued a proclamation, declaring the support of Florida for the Cubans' right to protest peacefully. Other city leaders have also voiced their support not only for the people of Cuba but also those who were living in the Miami area.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of Miami-Dade County said that they were standing with the Cuban people suffering on the island and all across different communities during the historic moment in the struggle for freedom, dignity, and basic human rights. Levine Cava shared that they were praying for the courageous actions of Cuban people in starting to give themselves real change and moving closer to a vision of a free Cuba, NBC Miami reported.

In addition, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez stated that the spontaneous uprising that has never happened in the last 60 years has happened in more than a dozen of cities across Cuba. Suarez stated that the government of Cuba has done what the country experienced under the Castro regime. The Cuban government shut down the internet, they also shut down the electricity and gone out on the streets to beat and harm those who were protesting peacefully for freedom and liberty of their country.

On the other hand, Cuban author Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance stated that the fight continued on the island despite government suppression and called on President Joe Biden to fix the situation.

Gutierrez-Boronat stated that people went to the streets in over 30 cities, and they have confirmed reports that despite the repression last night and hundreds of arrests in several cities in Cuba, people are still in the streets protesting. He also asked President Biden to fix what Kennedy broke and asked the U.S. president not to abandon the Cuban people.
