Former Vice President Dick Cheney is using the emerging civil war in Iraq to attack President Barack Obama.

Although Cheney spearheaded the plans to invade Iraq in 2003 under the Bush administration, he published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday arguing that President Obama is responsible for the recent surge of Sunni extremists in the country.

In the op-ed, which is co-written by his daughter Liz Cheney, he blames the precipitous collapse of the Iraqi state and the renewed civil war on the Obama Administration.

"Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many," write the Cheneys. "Too many times to count, Mr. Obama has told us he is 'ending' the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- as though wishing made it so."

According to the Cheneys, Obama's decision to withdraw combat troops from Iraq is one of the reasons for the civil unrest in the country.

"Instead [of leaving behind some residual American forces, training and intelligence capabilities to help secure the peace], he abandoned Iraq and we are watching American defeat snatched from the jaws of victory," the Cheneys write.

The piece continues, saying: "Iraq is at risk of falling to a radical Islamic terror group and Mr. Obama is talking climate change. Terrorists take control of more territory and resources than ever before in history, and he goes golfing. He seems blithely unaware, or indifferent to the fact, that a resurgent al Qaeda presents a clear and present danger to the United States of America."

In the op-ed, the Cheneys also accuse Obama of undoing the achievements made by troops serving in the Bush administration.

"When Mr. Obama and his team came into office in 2009, al Qaeda in Iraq had been largely defeated, thanks primarily to the heroic efforts of U.S. armed forces during the surge," the Cheneys write. "Mr. Obama had only to negotiate an agreement to leave behind some residual American forces, training and intelligence capabilities to help secure the peace. Instead, he abandoned Iraq and we are watching American defeat snatched from the jaws of victory."

The editorial received a storm of backlash on social media from people who accuse the former vice president of being a hypocrite due to his role as a major advocate of the Iraq War.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid criticized Cheney on the floor of the chamber, saying, "if there is one thing this country does not need, it's that we should be taking advice from Dick Cheney on wars. Being on the wrong side of Dick Cheney is to be on the right side of history," reports CNN.
