FIFA Investigates Mexico World Cup Fans After Homophobic Chants
FIFA is investigating alleged homophobic chanting from Mexican fans.
According to ESPN, Fare network, an organization established to fight discrimination in soccer, reported the use of anti-gay language during Mexico's matches against Cameroon and Brazil.
Fare alerted FIFA that the word "puto," or "male whore," was reportedly directed at the Cameroon and Brazil goalkeepers on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.
FIFA confirmed that it is conducting disciplinary proceedings against Mexico and added that it has been investigating alleged improper behavior of Mexican fans since before Fare informed it of the incidents.
"We can confirm that we have been contacted by Fare," FIFA said in a statement. "Prior to this, disciplinary proceedings were opened against Mexico for improper conduct of spectators during the match Mexico-Cameroon. As the proceedings are ongoing, we are not in a position to comment further."
The world governing body also insisted that it takes a zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination and that such discrimination could lead to suspension or expulsion based on Article 3 of the FIFA Statutes.
"FIFA takes a firm, zero-tolerance stance against any form of discrimination and racism, and this is enshrined in the FIFA Statutes in Article 3, which stipulates that: 'Discrimination of any kind against a country, private person or group of people on account of race, skin color, ethnic, national or social origin, gender, language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, wealth, birth or any other status, sexual orientation or any other reason is strictly prohibited and punishable by suspension or expulsion,'" FIFA added.
FIFA could also launch investigations against Russia and Croatia, The Telegraph reported.
According to Fare network, Russia and Croatia could face sanction for using neo-Nazi banners during their matches against South Korea and Brazil, respectively.
Russian fans, the subject of improper conduct allegations over the past several years, reportedly showed banners displaying a Celtic Cross, usually used by neo-Nazis and white supremacists, during their game against South Korea on Tuesday.
