'Glee' Star Naya Rivera's Family Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Ventura County Over Tragic Drowning Incident
The family of "Glee" star Naya Rivera has settled the wrongful death lawsuit they filed against Ventura County over the actress' tragic drowning nearly two years ago.
According to People, Rivera's ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, filed the suit in November 2020 on behalf of their 6-year-old son Josey, arguing that the actress' death was preventable.
In a statement released on Monday, lawyer Amjad M. Khan, who represents Josey and Rivera's estate, said all parties involved in the lawsuit have entered into "a global settlement, which is subject to approval by the Ventura Superior Court on March 16."
Through this settlement, Khan noted that Josey would receive "just compensation for having to endure the drowning of his beloved mother at Lake Piru," Entertainment Tonight reported.
The lawyer noted that the monetary settlement would "significantly assist Josey with his life beyond this tragedy," even though the "tragic loss of his mother can never truly be overcome."
Although he confirmed that Naya Rivera's family agreed to a settlement, the lawyer did not reveal how much the "Glee" star's son would receive.

Ex-Husband of 'Glee' Star Naya Rivera Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Naya Rivera's ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Ventura County on behalf of their son, who was on the water with her that day.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dorsey sued the county and the United Water Conservation District and Parks and Recreation Management for allegedly failing to warn visitors of the dangers of Lake Piru and provide the boat with the requisite safety equipment.
In the lawsuit, Rivera's camp argued that the boat the "Glee" star rented was not equipped with floatation or lifesaving devices. The complaint further noted that it also lacked a ladder, rope, anchor, or other equipment to keep swimmers from being separated from their boats.
It added that there were no warning signs in the area about dangerous conditions like strong currents, high winds, and low visibility.
The complaint said the lake where Rivera and her son went to reportedly has a "deadly history," with more than two dozen people who drowned in it over the years. However, it noted that no one warned the "Glee" star of the potential dangers while she was renting the boat.
Apart from the wrongful death, the lawsuit also includes claims for survival and negligent infliction of emotional distress.
Naya Rivera's Death
Naya Rivera took her then four-year-old son Josey to Lake Piru on July 8, 2020 for a day out. The actress arrived at a dock in her car and walked with Josey to rent a boat.
Rivera and her son decided to spend some time in the water and counted to three before jumping in. She told Josey to get back in the boat not long after.
Josey got back onto the boat with the help of Rivera. Josey reportedly heard his mother yell "help" before she put her arm in the air. She then disappeared into the water.
Josey was found alive and asleep on the boat. A call was placed to 911 and reported a missing person. Authorities searched for Rivera, which took several days due to difficult conditions that lowered visibility in the lake.
A week after she went missing, she was found in the lake, and authorities reported it was her. Officials identified her death as an accident as there was no indication of foul play or suicide.
Drugs and alcohol were also ruled out as contributing factors. An autopsy confirmed that the actress died of accidental drowning.
