Chris Watts is trying to pin the blame for his two young daughters' death on his mistress Nichol Kessinger, his former fellow inmate said.

David Carter, who said he spent two spells with the Colorado man in Dodge Correctional Facility, Wisconsin, told The Sun that Watts blamed Kessinger for the heinous murder of his daughters.

Carter noted that he and Watts were on the same unit together - unit 11 - when they became close. He said it was for persons that cannot fit in with the general population and people with medical issues.

The former inmate, who was charged with possession of methamphetamine and theft, said Watts was there for his protection while he was there for psychiatric issues and for cutting himself.

Carter told The Sun that Watts said Kessinger had "smothered the girls with their blankets, and they suffocated."

Carter added that Watts claimed that his mistress helped him get the girls into the oil tanks and dig the grave for his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts. The former inmate said Watts wanted to start a new life with his mistress, but Shanann was in the way.

Carter noted that Watts told him that it made him feel sad that her two daughters were killed, but "one of them woke up and saw that Shanann was dead and would be a witness."

The former inmate said Watts was unable to stomach killing his own children, and told him, "that's why Nichol killed them."

The Sun reported that to prove that the two know each other and have remained in touch, Carter showed the outlet a letter he claimed Watts sent to him.

The handwriting seems to match other letters that Chris Watts sent to Cherlyn Cadle, who wrote the book "Letters From Christopher" about her communications with him.

Nichol Kessinger and Chris Watts

David Carter earlier told Daily Mail that Chris Watts said that Nichol Kessinger had contacted him in prison by writing to him under her new name.

Carter said Kessinger, who has been living in hiding, had contacted Watts sometime or before September 2020. The former inmate noted that Watts shared this matter with him.

He also said that Watts told him that Kessinger contacted him to clear some things up. However, he noted that Watts did not tell him what exactly Kessinger had said.

Watt's former fellow inmate further noted that the killer dad was not supposed to have any contact with Kessinger, but she initiated writing to him.

Carter added that prison officials learned about these interactions and subsequently suspended the murderer's email account and started examining his mails.

In 2019, Watts told his pen pal Cherlyn Cadle that he was still in love with Nichol Kessinger, and he believed that some of the letters he received were from her writing under different names.

Chris Watts Murder Case

Chris Watts murdered Shanann Watts, and their two children, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste, in August 2018. Watts pleaded guilty to the crimes in November of the same year.

Watts said he took his wife and their kids' bodies to an oil site and buried them after killing them. Watts is currently serving a total of five life sentences in prison as Shannan's family did not seek the death penalty in the case.

Watts was reportedly in a relationship with Nichol Kessinger before committing the hideous crime. The pair met at their job at the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in Colorado in June 2018.

He allegedly lied to Kessinger when they met. He told her that he was in divorce proceedings with his wife at the time. He also refrained from telling Kessinger that his wife was pregnant with their third child.

After Chris Watts made the guilty plea, Kessinger was not able to speak with the media, and her whereabouts remain unknown.

Nichol Kessinger earlier said that she had left Colorado and started a new job. However, she noted that it would be hard for her to go out in public "for years" due to abuse and slander.

Some reports said that authorities placed her in a witness protection program and gave her a new name and identity.
