Canelo Alvarez is set to have a match with Kazakhstani boxer Gennadiy Golovkin this year, following his defeat to Dmitry Bivol in his previous boxing match.

According to ESPN, Alvarez announced his upcoming match with Golovkin during his gold invitational on Monday at Naucalpan, Mexico.

"We already had that contract [with Gennadiy Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol," Golovkin noted.

Golovkin also took to Twitter to announce his upcoming fight with the Mexican boxer.

"It's official. See you on September 17," Golovkin said in a tweet, including a poster of their upcoming bout.

The third fight between Golovkin and Alvarez is set to happen on September 17, SB Nation reported.

The fight will be streamed live on DAZN PPV in the United States and Canada. The bout will also be available on regular DAZN in other countries, excluding the Latin American region, Mexico, and Kazakhstan.

Gennadiy Golovkin on Fighting Canelo Alvarez for the 3rd Time

The third bout between Canelo and Golovkin will be contested at 168 pounds and double as Golovkin's debut at 40 years old as a full-fledged super middleweight.

In March, Golovkin expressed what he feels about his upcoming bout with the Mexican boxer.

"I am comfortable knowing I won those fights... I do not look back at the decisions. ... I thought I won the first two, so winning the third one would be the same to me," Golovkin said.

It can be recalled that Canelo and Golovkin did a big number in their bout in 2017 and 2018. Their first bout ended with a draw, while the second one was a narrow victory for Alvarez.

GGG has wanted the third fight between Alvarez and Golovkin for years, but the Mexican boxer moved up to 168 briefly in 2018, three months after their bout.

Meanwhile, Golovkin stayed in the middleweight his entire career.

Both boxers have improved since their last match, with Golovkin becoming 4-0 and 3 knockouts since their fight in 2018. Meanwhile, Canelo has gone 7-1 and 5 knockouts.

Canelo Alvarez Rematch With Dmitry Bivol Possible After Match With Gennadiy Golovkin

The match between Golovkin and Alvarez came after the Mexican boxer was defeated by Dmitry Bivol in T Mobile Arena.

Earlier in May, Alvarez assured his fans that he was not hurt at all in the aftermath of his bout with Bivol. However, the Mexican boxer underscored that his heart was pained over the result of the match.

SB Nation noted that Alvarez could have a rematch against Bivol if he wins the trilogy fight, as long as Bivol does not lose before then. However, if Canelo loses to Golovkin, the rematch between Bivol and the Mexican boxer would not be possible.

It can be recalled that Bivol said earlier that he is ready for a match against Canelo Alvarez, but he wants to make sure that he wins and that he is treated like a champion.
