El Chapo and His Rival Cartel Leader El Mochomo of Beltran Leyva Now Together at ADX 'Supermax' Prison in Colorado
Alfredo Beltran Leyva, known as "El Mochomo," was recently transferred to the ADX "supermax" prison in Florence, Colorado, where his rival, Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, is serving a life sentence.
According to data from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), El Mochomo, registered with the number 58525-007, was detained at the Hazelton Penitentiary Center in Preston County, Virginia prior to his transfer.
Borderland Beat reported that the leader of the Beltran Leyva Cartel requested his release through a letter appealing to the First Step Act (FSA) in March. The FSA offers "compassionate releases" and provides its beneficiaries with job training and an abbreviated sentence for good behavior.
However, the former Mexican drug kingpin received no response. And instead, El Mochomo was taken to one of the U.S.' highest-security prisons, known as the "Hell Hole" or the "Alcatraz of the Rocky Mountains."
The ADX Florence "supermax" prison is home to some of the world's most dangerous criminals, including El Chapo; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bomber; Zacarias Moussaoui, al-Qaeda conspirator in the 9/11 attacks; and Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski, known more widely as the "Unabomber."
Kaczynski has mailed or delivered bombs that killed three people and injured 24 more.
El Chapo's Rival Cartel Leader El Mochomo of Beltran Leyva Pleads Guilty to Drug Trafficking in the U.S.
Alfredo Beltran Leyva, also known as "The Fire Ant" for his short temper, was the leader of the Beltran Leyva Cartel along with his three brothers.
Beltran Leyva did not only traffick drugs across the Americas but also ordered hits which resulted in the murders of potential witnesses, rival gang leaders, and more.
The Mexican Army arrested him in 2008, and he was extradited to the U.S. in 2014. He was sentenced to life in prison on charges related to trafficking tons of cocaine and methamphetamine into the U.S. after he pleaded guilty in 2016.
The U.S. Justice Department said Beltran Leyva admitted that he was part of a conspiracy to import drugs from South American suppliers, which were transported to Mexico and then to the U.S. as a leader of the Beltran Leyva Cartel also known as the Beltran Leyva Organization.
El Mochomo was also ordered to forfeit $529 million.
Rivalry Between Sinaloa Cartel Boss El Chapo and El Mochomo of Beltran Leyva Cartel
According to the Huffington Post, El Mochomo is one of El Chapo's most notorious rivals. The drug cartel leader was a former ally of El Chapo before they became bitter rivals.
El Mochomo allegedly helped El Chapo build the Sinaloa Cartel into one of the biggest drug trafficking organizations in the world. Beltran Leyva is also part of El Chapo's extended family because he is married to one of the drug kingpin's cousins.
The Beltran Leyva Cartel reportedly worked with the Sinaloa Cartel before the two split and started a bloody war. El Mochomo and his brothers, namely Arturo, Carlos, and Hector, split from the Sinaloa Cartel sometime in 2008.
It has been speculated that Beltran Leyva parted ways with the cartel because he believed that El Chapo set up his arrest for the alleged murder of El Chapo's son, Edgar Guzman Lopez.
Edgar was gunned down in a hail of bullets in 2008. El Chapo himself allegedly ordered the hit in what proved to be a case of mistaken identity. Some of El Chapo's hitmen mistook Edgar's SUV as Beltran Leyva's vehicle.
El Chapo was arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico. He escaped from prison in 2001 and was apprehended again in 2014 in Sinaloa, Mexico.
The Sinaloa Cartel boss again escaped from prison through a tunnel the following year. In 2016, Mexican officials announced that El Chapo has been captured again.
The Sinaloa Cartel boss was extradited to the U.S. the following year. He was sentenced to spend the rest of his days in the ADX Florence "supermax" prison after being sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019.
El Chapo and El Mochomo will now be in the same prison, and it might complicate things inside one of America's most infamous penitentiaries.
