People on the West Coast might be experiencing a "dangerously hot" Labor Day as The Weather Prediction Center projects that some of the hottest temperatures on the West Coast will be hitting this week.

California, in particular, will be taking a major hit from the upcoming prolonged heat wave. Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Francisco counties are at very high risk of the supposed record-breaking temperatures.

The Pacific Northwest will also be affected by these high temperatures, but the peak will likely hit mid-week rather than the expected Labor Day weekend.

West Coast September Heat Wave: Who's Affected?

The Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management for Disaster Response, Recovery, and Preparedness Information issued a heat wave warning earlier today warning the Los Angeles County of the upcoming heat wave expected to hit this coming Wednesday until the Labor Day Weekend.

CNN described the effects of the upcoming heat wave to be "dangerously low" as over 55 million residents in Southern California, spanning to the San Joaquin Valley, are under heat alerts.

"Some records may be broken, but record max temps are very high at this time of the year. Record-breaking or not, this prolonged heat wave is going to be very dangerous." the Los Angeles National Weather Service says.

Based on the heat map that CNN released, San Francisco, Sacramento, and the Los Angeles Counties are at high risk for the heat wave. Forecasters projected temperatures could go as high as 112 Fahrenheit or 44 Celcius.

Aside from Southern California, areas in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah are also affected by the mega heat wave.

The Los Angeles National Weather Service says the heat will start on Tuesday and gradually grow warmer every day until the Labor Day weekend peak.

Is the Northwest Also Affected by the Upcoming Heat Wave?

Based on the same publication, the states in the Northwest region of the United States are also affected by the coming heatwave.

Seattle, Portland, and Boise are projected to record the 90s to triple digits. Although these areas could expect a cooler temperature around the 70s by the time Labor Day weekend comes.

"Highs are slated to top out upwards of 10-15 degrees above average as several locations could test daily records for max temperatures," the Seattle National Weather Service announced.

What's Causing the Heatwave?

Geographical Explainer says that heatwaves are formed when high pressure accumulates over an area (in this case, the Southwestern United States). It sinks the air through the atmosphere, then heats up as it goes.

In this week's heatwave, meteorologists say that a heat dome is a reason why the temperatures are tripling. The publication also explains that what forms heat domes is when this high pressure stays in the same area for days, which, in turn, traps the hot air and circulates it, causing high temperatures in the area.
