Donald Trump Formally Responds to Mar-a-Lago, Alleges Classified Docs Should Be 'Expected'
Former President Donald Trump has finally responded to the claims that classified material was found at his Mar-a-Lago residence after the FBI executed a search warrant on the premises while he was in New York.
Weeks ago, the National Archives made public a letter revealing a May correspondence between Acting National Archivist Debra Steiland Wall and Trump's legal counsel Even Corcoran about withholding the review of documents returned to the Archives last January.
Trump has recently filed to secure a special master, an independent reviewer of the classified materials found in his residence earlier this month.
Donald Trump's Response to DOJ's 'Classified' Mar-a-Lago Documents
In a court filing made public today, former President Donald Trump argued that the National Archives should expect that there would be top-secret documents found in the 15 boxes that they returned to the office since they are presidential records to begin with.
In the May letter that NARA has unsheathed, they mentioned 15 boxes of documents they received from Trump's team, which they believed to have contained highly classified information and government records.
According to CNN, Trump confirmed that classified information could actually be found in his Mar-a-Lago residence but asserted that it should not have been a cause for alarm since it was presidential records.
Per the former President's lawyers, the "purported justification" for the criminal probe was because of the "discovery" of sensitive information that is within the 15 boxes of documents delivered to NARA in January.
"But this 'discovery' was to be fully anticipated given the very nature of Presidential records. Simply put, the notion that Presidential records would contain sensitive information should have never been cause for alarm," the filing reads.
The FBI and the Department of Justice are currently reviewing the documents by the United States intelligence community. They have also launched a criminal investigation on Trump's alleged unlawful retention of such materials.
Based on US Magistrate Bruce Reinhart's search warrant, the search was justified because of the alleged violation of several federal statutes, including the Espionage Act.
Furthermore, Trump's legal team has also pointed out that based on the Presidential Records Act, the NARA could have "followed up" in good faith instead of referring the DOJ to conduct a criminal investigation.
President Biden Blasted Trump Followers, MAGA Republicans on Growing Violence Against FBI, Law Enforcement Agencies
Meanwhile, Trump's followers, including some MAGA republicans, have blasted The White House and the FBI for the political motivation behind the FBI raid.
President Joe Biden has called out these actions as violence and threats are already being made against the FBI and other law enforcement agencies for executing the search of Trump's residence.
This is because online threats have already translated to real-life crimes that even claimed a man's life in Ohio after being shot by the police after firing a nail gun on the FBI's Cincinnati office.
