A Missouri woman has been charged with murder after she admitted to shooting her husband while he was sleeping in their bed.

According to People, Melanie Biggins, 40, of Kansas City, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action last Wednesday for allegedly fatally shooting her husband in the back of the head.

The Jackson Prosecutor's Office announced the charges against Biggins in a press release on Friday. Biggins initially claimed an intruder broke into their home and shot her 50-year-old husband, Etienne McEwan.

The Missouri woman said she heard a gunshot when she and her husband were sleeping in their bed. When she sat up, she noted that she felt blood on her arm, causing her to crawl over McEwan and turn on a light.

Biggins then saw that her husband had been shot beneath his chin, and she immediately called the police and performed CPR until officers came.

The Missouri woman told police that she did not see who fired the shot but saw the front door was open. She then called 911 before attempting CPR on her husband.

Missouri Woman Killed Husband

Prosecutors noted that Kansas City Police Department officers were called regarding a shooting on the 1700 block of Gillespie on August 31.

Melanie Biggins was found performing CPR on her husband when police arrived at the scene past 1 a.m.

The Missouri woman allegedly told police that her husband's rifle was the only weapon in their home before she admitted to having bought a gun from a pawn shop.

According to KMBC News, police said the incident was not originally thought to be suspicious. However, the homicide unit was called in, and the death of Etienne McEwan was ruled a homicide by gunshot.

The court documents noted that the Missouri woman's statement does not match with two other people on the scene, who saw her downstairs sitting on the couch and looking like she "had seen a ghost."

The gun that Biggins bought in a pawn shop was found under the bed in a different room. Court documents said the Missouri woman could not explain to investigators why there was a gun under the bed.

Biggins told police officers that she and her husband had been married for nine years, but she had been in an affair with another man for a year and a half.

The Missouri woman said she wanted to divorce her husband but could not because she did not have the money.

Detectives said they traced the handgun to be bought in July. The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office concluded that Biggins' husband died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head, Fox 8 reported.

Melanie Biggins is reportedly being held on a $50,000 bond.

Another Missouri Woman Accused of Killing Her Husband

Another Missouri woman had reportedly shot her husband in the head while he was sleeping. Last month, Dawn Rene Wynn was reported to have gone missing, according to law enforcement officials.

Kansas City reported that officials determined her to be "considered dangerous." Wynn was out of bail and disappeared, with the sheriff's office encouraging everyone to be on the lookout and to exercise caution.

Benton County Sheriff's Office said Wynn was last spotted in Pea Ridge, Arkansas.
