U.S. Tourist Killed in Shark Attack While Snorkeling in the Bahamas
A 58-year-old U.S. tourist has been killed in a shark attack while snorkeling in the Bahamas, according to police.
Reuters reported that the Pennsylvania woman and her family were cruising on Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas. They were visiting New Providence for the day when they booked the trip.
The excursion company has taken the U.S. tourist and her family to Green Cay, which is about a half mile northwest of Rose Island.
Rose Island was reported in 2019 for having the same incident, wherein a 21-year-old U.S. tourist was killed in a shark attack.
Police said the family was snorkeling in waters on Tuesday in an area known for visitors to snorkel. Family members reportedly then observed a bull shark attacking the Pennsylvania woman.
According to the police, the tour company employees and family members rescued the U.S. tourist. She was then brought to mainland New Providence but was declared dead. The Pennsylvania woman had reportedly sustained injuries to her upper body area.
U.S. Tourist Killed in Shark Attack in the Bahamas
NBC reported that Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said in a news conference that the Pennsylvania woman was snorkeling with her five to seven relatives.
Skippings noted that the U.S. tourist had no vital signs after the shark attack. The area was then closed indefinitely to snorkelers, with Skippings saying it was "an unfortunate situation."
Bull sharks are among the most common shark species for unprovoked human attacks, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida.
The museum noted that bull sharks are large and capable of inflicting serious injuries and are commonly found in areas where humans enter the water. Bull sharks also have teeth designed to "shear rather than hold."
Shark Attack in the Bahamas in 2019
A shark attack in the Bahamas killed 21-year-old Loyola Marymount University student Jordan Lindsey in 2019. Lindsey was from Torrance, California.
As reported by ABC News, her family members had discussed how they have coped with their tragic loss. The family noted that it was their third day of a family vacation when they decided to take a last-minute snorkeling trip to Rose Island.
Lindsey's father, Michael Lindsey, said they had wished the company did not let them on, but the tour company snuck them on. Michael noted that her wife was a few feet away from their daughter at the time. It was then that a school of sharks suddenly attacked Jordan.
Michael said that her wife first thought that dolphins surrounded Lindsey but then realized their daughter was screaming. Authorities noted that Lindsey's arm was torn off from the attack, and she suffered bites to her left arm, legs, and buttocks.
Jordan's mom, Kami Lindsey, attempted to pull Jordan to safety, but another shark attacked the 21-year-old woman. Michael said the boat that arrived to transfer Lindsey to an ambulance had no first aid kit or medical supplies.
