A California cop turned himself in and confessed to killing a married couple with his service gun while they were sleeping in their bed inside their home.

This bizarre chain of events has led to California authorities being in shock. Devin Williams, Jr., 24, an Alameda County sheriff's deputy, turned himself in on Wednesday and admitted to his colleagues that he killed a couple inside their Dublin home.

Alameda County Sheriff Lt. Ray Kelly said: "This was a very bizarre chain of events that unfolded." He described the incident as a "tragedy," and all of them were shocked that Williams had done such a thing.

California Cop Devin Williams, Jr. Knew the Married Couple

According to Mercury News, the married couple was gunned down just after midnight Wednesday inside their home on the 3100 block of Colebrook Lane.

Police arrived at the scene around 12:45 a.m. after a caller told dispatchers that an intruder with a gun had entered the home, where they found a 58-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife fatally shot.

Their names have not been released. Ray Kelly said the couple was among six people inside the house at the time of the killings, including a relative and a child from out of town who made the 911 call. No one else was injured.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Department then issued a manhunt for Williams after witnesses identified him as the shooter. Kelly noted that the California cop knew the two victims, adding that this was not just a random crime.

It was reported that the couple was killed in an "execution style manner." Williams was arrested after he called and spoke to Dublin Police Chief Garrett Holmes. The police chief believed the California cop was facing a mental health crisis during the 45-minute phone call.

According to the New York Post, the California Highway Patrol picked Williams up some 160 miles away from the crime scene in Central Valley. Police said gunshots rang out shortly after the caller told the dispatcher that an armed intruder had entered the home.

Aside from the child and the visiting male relative, the couple's adolescent son was also home at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

County Sheriff's Office Staff Wonder if They Missed Something About Devin Williams, Jr.

Devin Williams, Jr. had a clean record before the shooting incident. Ray Kelly said nothing in his background would indicate that the California cop had some mental health problems.

He admitted that they would have to look into what had transpired in the past year to understand how this could lead to the murder of two people. Kelly added that some in the department wondered if they "missed something."

They considered Williams to be a "very good candidate for law enforcement." However, he noted that somewhere in the last few months, something might have happened.

He said the California cop has been with their department for a year and was assigned to the courts division. Williams reportedly began his day at 8 a.m. working at an Oakland courthouse before taking an overtime shift at around 5 p.m. at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

The District Attorney's Office of Alameda County will be joining the investigation. Authorities are still working to confirm the relationship between the two victims and Williams.

People reported that police were also searching for the gun used after Williams allegedly tossed it out of his car window as he fled.
