Mexico: 2 Beheaded Bodies Found in San Luis Potosi State Which Is Being Invaded by Several Mexican Drug Cartels

Two beheaded bodies were found Wednesday in Mexico's state of San Luis Potosi, which is plagued with violence between several Mexican drug cartels.

According to Borderland Beat, a woman discovered the two decapitated corpses on the road between Borregos and Rancho Tanque Tenorio in the Villa de Pozos neighborhood in San Luis Potosi city after taking several kids to school.

Local reports said the victims' hands and legs were tied up with ropes and their bodies had signs of torture.

Authorities in San Luis Potosi had already started a security operation in the area. Police said investigations into the incident were ongoing and were still working to identify the two decapitated men and those responsible for their deaths.

Violence Happening in San Luis Potosi State in Mexico

Last month, a deadly shootout between the police and suspected gang members in San Luis Potosi state resulted in the deaths of 13 people and the arrest of two others. According to reports, the 13 people killed were all suspected gang members. No San Luis Potosi state police were reported injured.

The Associated Press reported that The casualties included 10 men and three women. Authorities said tactical gear and vehicles were also seized following the operation that led to the shootout.

The operation was a result of investigations following the death of a state police operative and a relative. The shootout happened the same day state police arrested four people burying the officer and the relative in the Vaqueros community in Rayon municipality.

According to reports, security forces were looking for a high-ranking civil guard leader who was kidnapped, along with his wife. It led the police to a location in the Vaqueros community and arrested the four people attempting to bury their bodies.

Drug trafficking organizations, including local gangs and big drug cartels, often target government security forces with their acts of violence. That is a common practice in San Luis Potosi state in north-central Mexico, where the shootout happened.

Mexican Drug Cartels Like Jalisco Cartel Seek Control of San Luis Potosi State in Mexico

Several Mexican drug cartels are currently vying for territory and smuggling routes in Mexico's state of San Luis Potosi. The two most prominent are the local Northeast Cartel and the deadly Jalisco cartel, which had been invading the state as of late.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel or Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) released a video in February 2020 wherein it announced its arrival in San Luis Potosi and expressed its intent to control the state.

According to Mexico News Daily, the video, which was released on social media, showed seven CJNG members wearing military-style uniforms and helmets. One gunman issued a warning to rival Mexican drug cartels operating in the state.

In another video that circulated on social media in early 2020, a man surrounded by some 30 heavily-armed men with a banner displaying the CJNG initials as a backdrop issued a direct warning to rival Los Zetas, Northeast, and Gulf cartels that operate in San Luis Potosí.

The man also asked the municipal police not to interfere in their drug trafficking operations in exchange for not attacking their officers. He said they were working for the "well-being of the citizens."

So far, Mexican drug cartels like the Jalisco cartel have largely dominated Mexico and resisted efforts by local police to eradicate them.
