‘Harry Potter’ Star Robbie Coltrane Dead; Daniel Radcliffe, JK Rowling Pay Tribute to Hagrid Actor
British acting legend Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, has passed away in a hospital near Falkirk, Scotland. He was 72.
The cause of his death was not yet made public. However, Deadline reported that the Scottish actor "had been in ill health for the past two years."
He is survived by his children Spencer and Alice, their mother Rhona Gremmel, and his sister, Annie Rae. His family also asked the public to respect their privacy during this distressing time.
J.K. Rowling, Daniel Radcliffe, Other Harry Potter Stars Pay Tribute to Robbie Coltrane
Coltrane's most iconic role will always be as Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, released a statement following his co-star's passing.
"I've especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid's hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up," Radcliffe said in that statement. He added that he feels "incredibly lucky" he got to work with Coltrane and is very said that he had passed away. Finally, the Harry Potter star stated that "He was an incredible actor and a lovely man."
On Twitter, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling also posted a tribute to the late actor. She said that she was fortunate to know him and work with him. She then sent her condolences to his family.

Other Harry Potter actors also released statements, with Bonnie Wright, who portrayed Ginny Weasley, stating that she was heartbroken when she found out about his passing. Meanwhile, David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin, said "The richest, mightiest and most mischievous laughter on set was all big Robbie's fault." He then said that Coltrane will be forever loved and will be sorely missed.
The Weasley Twins also shared their thoughts on the late Coltrane, with Oliver Phelps, who played George Weasley, talking about Coltrane giving them advice on their first red carpet premiere for the first Harry Potter movie. Meanwhile, his twin brother, James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley, stated that Coltrane came over to him on his first day on set and calmed his nerves by giving him some advice,
Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger, stated "Robbie, if I ever get to be so kind as you were to me on a film set, I promise I'll do it in your name and memory."
Robbie Coltrane's Legendary Career
While Coltrane is best known for his role as Hagrid, he was also known for his other roles. Born Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, in 1950, the larger-than-life Scotsman came to prominence in the BBC comedy series A Kick Up the Eighties.
He landed the lead role in the British music film, Tutti Frutti, as well as appeared in the British crime film, Mona Lisa. One of his most famous roles, however, arrived in the 90s as he played criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald in the ITV series Cracker. According to the BBC, he won a BAFTA for that role for three consecutive years.
