The north-central Mexican state of Guanajuato has become the bloodiest in the Mexican drug war, and Sunday, several gunmen attacked and shot at a police station in the city of Celaya. It turned bloody when police fired back at their attackers.

CBS News reported that there were multiple fatalities, mostly from the gunmen who attacked the police station. Authorities then revealed that around six of the gunmen died in that shootout. It was also noted that this attack occurred in a town on the outskirts of Celaya.

Following the deadly encounter, Celaya Police Security Secretary Jesus Rivera Peralta spoke to the media and said that three police officers were wounded. However, he added that none of them had any life-threatening injuries.

Guanajuato has become the deadliest state in Mexico in terms of homicide, as the state has the unenviable honor of having the highest number of homicides in Mexico. Government data states that over 2,100 killings have been registered in the state between January and August.

According to Fox News, Rivera Peralta stated that the police officers "responded to the aggression and organized a response." This then led to the deaths of those six of the gunmen, believed to be cartel members.

Celaya Police Intercepted Gunmen as They Ran Away, Killing Some of Them

There were eight gunmen who attacked the police station and traveled using two white vans. La Jornada reported that after they were repelled, the gunmen retreated but were pursued by the cops. The pursuit led the police into a building where another firefight broke out between the two sides.

Six of the attackers were killed, with police stating that two of the attackers were killed at the scene, another was left on the road, and another was aboard a Hinda truck that was previously reported stolen three days prior to the attack.

La Jornada also reported that there were four detainees and another person injured following the shootout.

During the firefight, the Mexican army, the National Guard, the State Public Security Forces (FSPE), and the Celaya Police all responded, and there was even a helicopter involved.

However, authorities have not yet revealed which group the attackers were affiliated with, as there are currently multiple groups vying for supremacy in the state, the biggest being the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Guanajuato and Drug Organizations

Guanajuato has been plagued by several drug organizations vying for supremacy in Guanajuato. The local gang known as the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel used to be the biggest group in the state, though a turf war ensued when the CJNG started muscling in on their territory.

Bloody turf wars between the various rival gangs for drug smuggling routes have become common in the state, and they do not even care if civilian casualties result in their feuds.

Earlier this month, several bar patrons were killed when Santa Rosa de Lima gang members opened fire inside a bar that is allegedly linked to their CJNG rivals.
