Donald Trump Suffers Another Defeat as Supreme Court Allows House Committee to Get and See His Tax Returns
Former President Donald Trump has suffered another major defeat in legal battle as the Supreme Court cleared the way for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to release his tax returns to a Democratic-led House committee.
According to CNN, Trump has been trying to stop the IRS from releasing his tax returns for years, which has been the subject of multiple investigations.
The high court, with no noted dissents, denied Trump's plea for an order that would have prevented the Treasury Department from releasing Trump and and some of his businesses' tax returns.
House Committee Asking For Donald Trump's Tax Returns Since 2019
The Treasury Department under the Trump administration previously refused to provide the records as the former president noted that the IRS was still auditing it, and he promised to release them soon. And that has never happened, even after he left office, as he tried to block any inquiry into his tax returns.
The Democrats then took control of the House following the 2018 midterm elections. The House Ways and Means Committee then sought the former president's tax returns in 2019, but the Treasury Department had still refused to hand them over.
When President Joe Biden took office, his administration noted that federal law was clear about the fact that the House Ways and Means Committee has the right to examine any taxpayer's return, including the president's.
With the Supreme Court's decision on Tuesday, the Democratic-led House committee can now access Trump's tax returns from 2015 to 2020. However, this comes just weeks before the Republicans retake control of the House after the latest midterm elections.
According to BBC, Democrats will not have much time to review them before Republicans take over on January 3. However, a few weeks may be long enough to find evidence of any unusual or potentially improper accounting by Trump and to leak these details to the public.
String of Legal Defeats for Donald Trump
The former president's legal team has tried to keep his tax returns a secret and has turned to the Supreme Court to rule on this, as Donald Trump previously nominated three of its members into the highest court in the land.
He previously lost at a lower court and in a D.C. Appeals Court, which also refused to reverse the lower court ruling. Now, the Supreme Court ultimately agreed with both courts' decision.
According to the Associated Press, this was Trump's third loss at the Supreme Court, with many of the judges he appointed ultimately not siding with him. Last month, the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the Mar-a-Lago documents case.
In January, the high court also refused to stop the National Archives from turning over documents to the House Ways and Means Committee. It was reported that the only dissenting vote came from Justice Clarence Thomas, whose wife, Ginny Thomas, was implicated in the plot to overturn the election results.
The former president is facing a civil case in New York investigating the Trump Organization and a criminal investigation into his businesses by the Manhattan District Attorney.
He is also under investigation in Georgia for election tampering. There are also two federal investigations into Donald Trump concerning the Mar-a-Lago documents and the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
