The World Cup's Round of 16 is officially over in Qatar, and the Final 8 have been decided. These are the eight best teams in the world right now as they play for the biggest prize in soccer. So, which teams made it to the World Cup Quarterfinals?

The Round of 16 ended with Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal dominating Switzerland with a final score of 6-1. However, the real story of the night was Morocco, who upset European powerhouse Spain. Morocco is the last African team left in the tournament, and they just sent one of the European favorites packing via a penalty shootout.

While people have been talking about Japan being the surprise team of the tournament, Morocco actually defeated not one, but two favorites and eliminated both of them, namely Spain and Belgium. The African side now enters the quarterfinals for the first time. However, waiting for them is another neighbor, this time, Portugal.

This raises an interesting question of whether or not Morocco will continue their unlikely Cinderella run and be the first African team to reach the semifinals or whether Cristiano Ronaldo fulfills his destiny and advances to the finals to meet eternal rival Lionel Messi who is over at the other side of the bracket. As this tournament has shown, upsets really do happen.

An Age-Old Rivalry Renewed in the World Cup Quarterfinals

England and France have been eternal rivals since the Middle Ages, and this rivalry has even been evident in soccer. This time, the young and hungry French will be battling their eternal nemesis from across the English Channel with Le Bleu taking on the Three Lions.

So far, England has played defensively, as pointed out by CNN. They have smothered opponents with overwhelming defense and have three clean sheets in the tournament so far, including their 3-0 thrashing of African Champions Senegal.

Meanwhile, over in France, the team has been solid all around, However, even with some high-quality players on their roster, it has all been about one man, Kylian Mbappé. They were upset by Tunisia in the Group Stage, but France wants to prove that they are the better team in this rivalry.

Brazil and Argentina Aiming to Cement Their World Cup Legacies

Over on the other side of the bracket, two South American teams may be preparing to renew their age-old rivalry as well. However, they must each go through their respective opponents first for that to happen.

Brazil has looked good ever since Neymar returned, and a spark lit up in the Brazilians when they dispatched the South Koreans in a one-sided domination. However, they must first go through Croatia, which has managed to stave off the tournament's other surprising giant killers, Japan.

Brazil is also seeking to cement its legacy as the most dominant team in soccer, and the Croatians are the next team standing in their way.

Argentina managed to shake off that opening loss to Saudi Arabia and dominated every following game they played. According to Al Jazeera, they will face Cody Gakpo and the Netherlands next, and it will surely be a big test for the South Americans.

Lionel Messi is seeking the one achievement that has eluded him all his career. As this may be the final World Cup in his long and illustrious career, he has been very hungry in his quest for what may be his first and only World Cup championship.
