Jill Biden to Undergo Surgery to Remove 'Small Lesion' Above Right Eye Found During Skin Cancer Screening
First Lady Jill Biden will undergo a surgical procedure to remove a small lesion above her right eye.
Dr. Kevin O'Connor, the physician to President Joe Biden, said the lesion was found during a routine skin cancer screening, Fox News reported.
O'Connor noted that it will be removed on January 11, and the tissue will then be tested. He said the small lesion will be removed "in an abundance of caution," with other doctors recommending it removed.
O'Connor noted that the surgery will be done at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, with the first lady to undergo a procedure known as Mohs surgery.
He said they will release an update regarding the matter once the procedure was completed and they had more information.
Mohs surgery is a common outpatient procedure that removes thin layers of skin to look for signs of the most common types of skin cancer, including other less-common skin cancers.
Jill Biden is considered to be the oldest sitting first lady in modern U.S. history.
President Joe Biden's Routine Physical Exams
In 2021, Kevin O'Connor reported that Joe Biden "remains fit for duty" after the president's first physical exam while in office.
The president's physician also reported that a "single 3mm, benign-appearing polyp" was removed from Biden's colon during a routine colonoscopy.
The procedure required the president to be placed under anesthesia at the time. Biden was experiencing an increase in the frequency and severity of throat clearing during speaking engagements.
O'Connor said he believed that acid reflux was causing the problem, which was supported by the exam and expert consultation.
O'Connor also raised a concern regarding the president's "ambulatory gait," which he said was "perceptibly stiffer and less fluid as it was a year ago." Biden took his physical exam at Walter Reed National Army Medical Center.
While Biden was under anesthesia for his colonoscopy, Vice President Kamala Harris became the acting president. It was the first time a female occupied such a position in U.S. history.
President Joe Biden and Jill Biden
The first lady visited the Children's National Hospital in Washington with the president before Christmas.
The two met with families in the hospital's Cardiac Intensive Care Unit while also seeing the telehealth command center to learn about the technology used to monitor children with critical heart disease.
It was the second time Biden had joined the first lady for a visit. Jill also read "The Snowy Day," an award-winning story about a boy named Peter and his adventures in the snow. It was written by Ezra Jack Keats.
According to the White House, Joe Biden and the first lady also thanked the doctors, nurses, and staff, including the healthcare workers at the hospital's Emergency Department.
Jill Biden's visit was an annual tradition that dates back 80 years to Bess Truman, the wife of former President Harry S. Truman.
Bess visited children who were too ill to be home on Christmas to bring holiday cheer.
