Elon Musk Revises Twitter Employee Benefits; Perks Still Include Coffee and Snacks but Fertility Benefits Cut
Elon Musk has made new changes in his newly acquired social media company Twitter. This time he revises Twitter's employee benefits.
According to Gizmodo, Twitter has amended one of its employee benefits, which is fertility benefits.
Aside from the fertility benefits, Twitter has also reportedly removed commuter reimbursement and meal allowances. However, coffee and snacks in the company will still be available.
Twitter previously gave its employees up to $80,000 in lifetime coverage for expenses related to fertility treatments such as egg and sperm freezing, donor retrieval, surrogacy, and/or the cost of adopting children.
Currently, fertility benefits have been cut in half, as shown in email exchanges from the third-party provider, Carrot.
According to the email, Twitter employees will see their fertility benefits allowing them to access $40,000 in coverage starting January 1 of this year.
Twitter Employee's Fertility Benefits Reduced
A former Twitter employee noted that she was in the middle of an IVF and had to stop shortly after Elon Musk took over the company, and she lost her job.
She noted that the social media company previously offered to cover $24,000 for IVF in 2022 and 2023. It was now reported that a "group of now ex-Twitter staff" are experiencing the same situation.
IVF usually requires at least two or three cycles to succeed, with one single cycle costing around $10,000 to $20,000.
Meanwhile, Twitter CEO Elon Musk had five children through IVF with his first wife, Justine Musk. He also had twins with his Neuralink employee Shivon Zilis through IVF.
In addition, one of his two children with Grimes was born a surrogate. Other Twitter employee benefits have also been reduced, including daycare facilities for children of staff and home internet provision.
Twitter Employee Benefits Under Elon Musk
In November, an internal memo that was circulated among the remaining Twitter staff noted that allowance will be reviewed over time "and may be added back when the company's financial situation improves."
The staff lost employee benefits, including training and development, finishing school, and quarterly team activities. Allowances and activities connected to employee wellness and productivity were also cut off.
Musk also told the company's remaining employees that there would be encryption of direct messages and working on adding encrypted video and voice calling between accounts.
Since Musk took over the social media company, he laid off around 50% of Twitter's more than 7,000 employees last November 4, just a week after he acquired the company.
Musk tweeted at the time that the laid-off employees were offered "three months of severance." However, a lawyer representing hundreds of Twitter workers, Shannon Liss-Riordan, noted that no one had received their severance pay yet.
Liss-Riordan noted that they do not know what Musk is doing, but they expected that severance agreements should have been sent out by now.
Twitter is also facing other lawsuits after a series of unpaid bills for private chartered plane flights, office rent, and software services.
