A Bolivian man who got lost in the Amazon jungle has detailed his ordeal of surviving there for 31 days.

Jhonattan Acosta, 30, and his four hunting companions got separated in northern Bolivia.

Acosta survived by drinking rainwater from his shoes and eating worms and insects while he hid from jaguars and peccaries, he claimed.

A group of locals and friends looked for Acosta for a month before they finally found him, BBC reports.

"It's incredible; I can't believe people kept up the search for so long," he said amid tears.

"I ate worms, I ate insects, you wouldn't believe all I had to do to survive all this time," he said, adding that he also ate local wild fruit, gargateas, which are very similar to papaya. "I thank God profusely because he has given me a new life."

The details of how the Bolivian man got lost and how he remained alive would still need to be pieced together, according to his family. However, they promised to gradually bring up the subject with him because he was still reeling from the ordeal.

Bolivian Man Promises to Give Up Hunting After His Experience

''I asked God for rain. If it hadn't rained, I would not have survived,'' he said, but when rain stopped falling, he had no choice but to ingest his own urine.

After being lost for 31 days, he miraculously saw a search party from a distance of 300 meters and hobbled towards them while calling for assistance. Four men were able to track him down.

Acosta dropped 17 kgs (37 lbs), suffered a dislocated ankle, and was malnourished after spending a month in the bush. After the trauma, he was transferred to a medical facility and given a clean shave and haircut, according to NDTV.

Now that he has found God, he no longer wishes to pursue hunting and instead wants to spend his time playing music for Him.

"He is going to play music to praise God. He promised God that, and I think he will keep his promise," Horacio Acosta, the survivor's younger brother, said.

Several Individuals Have Also Gone Missing in Amazon Jungle in the Past

After surviving for nearly four weeks on nothing but rainwater, two young boys were found after they got lost in the Amazon jungle, The Daily Beast noted.

A major search was impeded by rain on February 18, 2022, after Glauco and Gleison Ferreira, ages 8 and 6, disappeared while chasing birds in the Brazilian bush.

Rescue personnel quit after a week, but the brothers were discovered by a local woodcutter who overheard screams. They were carried to the hospital, weak and bruised, and had not eaten anything during their experience.

Meanwhile, a pilot, Antonio Sena, also spent 38 days in the Amazon jungle after crashing in the Brazilian Amazon in 2021, said CBS News.

Another noteworthy incident is the 1981 case of Israeli explorer Yossi Ghinsberg in Bolivia; his three-week ordeal in the Amazon jungle was the basis for the film "Jungle," starring Daniel Radcliffe.
