A Texas Man has been indicted for sending threatening voicemail messages to the office of California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters. These incidences happened several times last year, with the suspect telling the politician that he intended to "cut your throat."

Texas man Brian Michael Gaherty, 60, was indicted and charged with four counts of making threats in interstate communications, as well as four counts of threatening a U.S. official, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.

The Associated Press reported that Gaherty also threatened other elected officials, as well as a news reporter in Houston. He was arrested last April 13 after a criminal complaint about his threats to the House Democrat was filed by federal prosecutors.

The indictment stated that the Texas man "knowingly threatened to assault and kill" Waters while she was doing her duties as a California Representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. He called Waters' office four times, twice in August and twice in November. In all four calls, he left a threatening message.

The Threatening Messages Left by Brian Michael Gaherty to Rep. Maxine Waters

U.S. Capitol Police Officer Michael Guest stated in an affidavit that the calls made by Gaherty were left in Waters' office in Hawthorne, California. These calls also had racist content in them, according to The Hill.

In those voicemail messages, the Texas man appeared to have identified himself as White. Aside from Waters, he also reportedly left at least 11 voicemails threatening to assault two other congresswomen of color since last September. This led to a Capitol Police investigation after a Waters staffer spoke with Gaherty in November 2022.

"Tell Congresswoman Maxine Waters when I see her on the street, I'm going to bust her upside her head," said the suspect to the congresswoman's staff member., "F-, who this is, tell that lying B-- I'm looking for her."

In those calls, Gaherty, a White resident of Houston, Texas, reportedly accused Waters, a Black California congresswoman, of "trying to remember 1960 and all that" and "causing controversy."

Texas Man Brian Michael Gaherty Had Racist Tendencies

The affidavit also stated that Gaherty has a "history of sending racist, violent threats to other congresswomen." He allegedly left 10 of these racist voicemails to another female representative of color between September 2022 and February 2023, as well as a different lawmaker in November 2022.

"My people going to do some damage on you. You know what I'm saying?" Gaherty said to one African-American congresswoman. "Now we're not going to kill you. We're gonna make you suffer a b--. You better act right..."

After Capitol Police spoke with Gaherty thanks to this call, the Texas man called again, stating, "You snitch... Now we gotta come over here and take care of our f-- business. You know what I'm saying?" He then warned, "Be careful, b--. Watch your back, man."

Gaherty did not just target Black congresswomen, as one of the politicians he also left threatening voicemail messages to was Latina, according to NBC News.
