Mike Tyson Predicts Canelo Alvarez Defeat vs. David Benavidez
Former professional boxer Mike Tyson has dropped a bold prediction about the Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez fight during a feature on the "Boxing Arabia" podcast.
Tyson said that his guy would be Benavidez, noting that he thinks he can beat anybody in the division. He went on to say that he loves Canelo, but "he's not going to beat him," as reported by Boxing Social.
The famed professional boxer said Canelo is a "little past his prime" and that Benavidez could even beat Dmitriy Bivol, who was the one who beat Alvarez.
However, a fight between Alvarez and Benavidez looks unlikely to be scheduled anytime soon as Alvarez is set to rematch Bivol later in the year if he gets through mandatory challenger John Ryder on May 6.
If Alvarez gets to go past Ryder, he is expected to fight with Bivol in September.
Canelo Alvarez Vs. David Benavidez
Tyson is not the only one betting his money on Benavidez against the Alvarez vs. Benavidez fight.
Clutch Points noted that boxing icon Floyd Mayweather has previously said that Alvarez was "ducking Benavidez."
Meanwhile, former undisputed light heavyweight champion Andre Ward stated that he "would lean towards Benavidez" in a match.
Ward added that he would like to see how Alvarez deals with the two-time WBC super-middleweight champion as Benavidez "isn't just throwing to throw," as cited by Clutching Points.
Ward said that Benavidez got power on his punches, while Alvarez has "got a great boxing mind."
Ward, who retired with an undefeated record, said that the possible match-up is great "stylistically," adding that he hopes people get to see it.
Benavidez recently fought against Caleb Plant in March to defend his WBC interim super middleweight title.
Mike Tyson on Canelo Alvarez
In December, Tyson was reported to have issued a statement to Canelo Alvarez hollowing the latter's threat to Messi after a photo appeared to show the football star kicking a Mexico shirt on the dressing room floor. It was after Argentina's World Cup game.
Tyson said that someone called and that Alvarez "threatened Messi," to which the retired American professional boxer said that he "will have to return to the ring," if Alvarez were to touch Messi.
Sports fans were then quick to catch up and said that Alvarez "backed out on Messi" threat because Tyson supports the Argentina captain, according to The Sun.
Alvarez then apologized for his statement, saying that he "got carried away by the passion and love" he feels for his country, which led him to make comments "that were out of place."
He then apologized to the football star and the people of Argentina.
Alvarez said every day is a new learning, and at that time, it was his turn to learn something.
Tyson was reported to be a fan of Messi for years.
