California Police Arrest Former UC Davis Student for Series of Stabbings Near Campus
California police said Thursday that a former UC Davis student was arrested in connection with the three stabbings near the campus within the span of five days.
According to CNN, Carlos Dominguez, the 21-year-old former student at the University of California, Davis, was arrested on two counts of homicide and one count of attempted murder.
The stabbing incidents in Davis City had left two people dead, one in critical condition, and the community reeling in fear.
In a press conference on Thursday, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel finally linked the three attacks, saying all three stabbings "are connected" and "they have evidence and information" that only one person was responsible.
A woman named Kimberlee Guillory was critically injured in the latest attack near campus on Monday night. Pytel said Guillory was "severely wounded" but is now recovering at the UC Davis Medical Center after surgery.
On April 29, or two days before Guillory was stabbed, a concerned individual contacted 911 to report a disturbance in Sycamore Park, about 1.5 miles northwest of Central Park.
The caller said before calling 911, he went outside to find out what happened and found a man who appeared to have been stabbed numerous times.
The victim, a male in his early 20s, was found by police, and emergency workers pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities identified the second victim as UC Davis student Karim Abou Najm, 20.
David Henry Breaux, 50, a frequent visitor to Central Park, was named the first victim. Davis police responded to a call of a man discovered unconscious in the park on April 27.
Emergency responders found Breaux with several stab wounds, and he was later pronounced dead.
Dominguez was a third-year student at the university until he was "separated for academic reasons" on April 25, according to a news release by UC Davis.
Former UC Davis Student in California Arrested
Carlos Dominguez was arrested as a person of interest after police discovered a large hunting knife in his bag, according to Pytel, Fox 40 reported.
The knife seemed consistent on the weapon used in the initial stabbing, but police said they still have to examine if it is the knife used in the attacks.
Pytel noted that Dominguez was cooperative throughout the interrogation and appeared to know that the police were looking for him.
A warrant for Dominguez's arrest was issued on Thursday afternoon, and he was formally taken into custody as a suspect. Police searched his Davis apartment for evidence and spoke with his housemates.
Davis Mayor Will Arnold noted that it was remarkable to bring this case to this point quickly.
"I commend and thank our partners, professionals who worked around the clock to ensure this criminal was taken out of our neighborhoods... I thank the community members that helped crack this case," the mayor said.
Davis Stabbing Suspect Could be a Serial Killer
Pytel said investigators believe that Carlos Dominguez is from Oakland but are still working to learn more. Police noted that the definition of a serial killer could be applied to this case, according to ABC 10.
Police are still determining if the suspect had a criminal record before this arrest or if he knew the victims. Dominguez is now in the Yolo County jail. Pytel said the suspect is set to be arraigned in the Yolo County courthouse on Monday.
