Donald Trump Attorneys Meet With Justice Department as Indictments Loom in Classified Documents Case
In what may be a sign that the Trump classified documents case is winding down, Donald Trump's lawyers met with the Justice Department on Monday. It was a meeting that the Trump attorneys requested themselves last month.
Sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that Trump attorneys - John Rowley, James Trusty, and Lindsey Halligan were at the Main Justice building to meet with Jack Smith and federal prosecutors. Their meeting lasted just under two hours, with the lawyers declining to comment about what happened inside.
The former president's attorneys reportedly asked to meet with top federal law enforcement officials, though Attorney General Merrick Garland, who approved the meeting, did not attend.
People familiar with what happened inside stated that the Trump legal team was "frustrated" with how the Justice Department was handling attorney-client matters recently. They are reportedly likely to raise the issue again when prosecutors discuss related issues in front of the grand jury.
This may involve Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran, who recently left the defense for the Trump classified documents case because it was found that Donald Trump lied to him regarding where the classified documents were being kept.
This act, which would have prevented the lawyer from doing his duty to comply with a subpoena, would theoretically cancel out attorney-client privilege regarding the matter, allowing Corcoran to testify against his client in court.
Donald Trump Attorneys Asked Justice Department Not To Charge Former President
According to the Washington Post, two Trump advisers have already been briefed on what happened during the meeting. These advisers stated they were already planning for a potential indictment of the former president before the meeting, and the meeting itself did not change their expectations.
During the meeting, the Trump attorneys reportedly made their case on why their client should not be indicted concerning his possession of classified documents after leaving office.
However, while attorneys trying to change the mind of DOJ officials with such meetings are not uncommon, these acts rarely change the minds of prosecutors, many of whom have already spent months gathering evidence against the defendant.
Donald Trump Rants on Social Media After Attorneys Met With Justice Department
While the Justice Department's decision on whether or not to indict the former president is still unknown, Donald Trump himself is not making his case any better as he lambasted the DOJ shortly after the meeting.
In another all-caps rant on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, "HOW CAN DOJ POSSIBLY CHARGE ME, WHO DID NOTHING WRONG, WHEN NO OTHER PRESIDENT'S WERE CHARGED, WHEN JOE BIDEN WON'T BE CHARGED FOR ANYTHING." He then went to his go-to line whenever he faces any legal ramifications, "ONLY TRUMP - THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!"
Trump continued his whataboutism-filled rant by pointing fingers at President Joe Biden. Trump claimed that Biden, who he might face off against in 2024, kept "1850 BOXES [of documents]. MUCH OF IT CLASSIFIED."
However, Rolling Stone pointed out that only a relatively small number of classified documents were found in several of Biden's residences and offices, with the current president being investigated by his own Justice Department over this.
