Republican presidential hopefuls are now piling in on former President Donald Trump for using campaign donations to fund his ongoing legal battles.

Trump has been facing various investigations over the last few months, including fraud cases against the Trump Organization, his E. Jean Carrol Civil Rape Case, his classified documents scandal, his porn star hush money payment scandal, his Georgia election meddling investigation, and the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in all of these cases.

A large portion of the ex-POTUS' campaign funds is now being used for his legal fees, with the fine print in Trump's WinRed donation page increasing the amount being diverted to his controversial Save America PAC going from 1% to 10%.

The Independent noted that his taking funds from his political campaign to his legal defense is a sign that the many court battles he is facing have already put a strain on the former president's finances.

Trump has had a history of using his legal troubles to fire up his base and get donations from them. After the 2020 elections, the Trump campaign pleaded with donors to contribute to his "Official Election Defense Fund," citing that the elections were stolen. That fund actually did not exist.

In addition, the Trump campaign had been squeezing money from his supporters through an overlooked and opaque fine print. Several Trump supporters have now complained that they had made donations they had not intended to make, some of which were worth thousands of dollars. This made some donors cancel their credit cards to avoid the recurring payments to the Trump campaign.

Republican Rival Chris Christie Pushes Back Against Donald Trump's Campaign Funds Usage

Trump, who had been constantly touting his wealth, was slammed by his GOP presidential rivals over the usage of campaign funds for his legal fees. One of the loudest is former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The former governor recently spoke to Politico in an interview, saying that Trump is "the cheapest S.O.B. I've ever met in my life." He added, "What Donald Trump is good at is spending other people's money."

Christie did not hold back, saying, "This is a billionaire who refused to pay his lawyers with his own personal money, and instead, men and women out there who believe in him and wanted [him] to be elected president are donating money to try to forward his candidacy ... and he's diverting that money to pay his own legal fees."

The former governor also pointed out, "He is the richest candidate in this race, yet he is using public money to pay his legal fees. He should be ashamed of himself."

Republican Presidential Candidate Asa Hutchinson Also Slams Donald Trump

Another presidential rival also spoke out against Trump: former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson. He stated, "Donald Trump is not fighting for us, but is using us to pay his legal bills."

According to MSNBC, the Republican candidate also added, "He is using small dollar donations from supporters to do this. Americans struggle to make ends meet, while one of the (self-proclaimed) richest men in the country leverages them into paying his debts."
