Philadelphia Shooting: Suspect Has 'Indications of Mental Health Issues,' Says DA
The Philadelphia shooting suspect, 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker, may be having some mental health issues. This is according to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who provided an update on the mass shooting attack on the eve of Independence Day in Philadelphia that killed five people and injured four others.
DA Krasner spoke with CNN and told the outlet that investigators are now looking through Carriker's social media history and his possible mental health issues.
"I can certainly tell you that there are indications of mental health issues. There are indications of irrational behavior. There are indications of irrational statements and irrational acts," he said.
The Philadelphia Public Defender's Office is representing Carriker, and it told CNN that the office would not comment yet on the case. Caricker is facing multiple charges of murder for his actions.
The Philadelphia shooting suspect has now been arraigned, and investigators see "all kinds of indications of premeditation" in the attack. However, Krasner admitted, "But when you get into issues of psychological state, motivation, intent beyond the obvious, which is that he obviously planned this ... that can be a monthslong process."
Philadelphia Shooting Suspect's Motive Revealed
Caricker has been questioned extensively by authorities after he was arrested while wearing body armor and a ski mask and carrying an assault rifle and a ghost gun. However, after his arrest, the mass shooter reportedly told officers that he did a good job.
Caricker was firing indiscriminately and said that he shot people because he was "cleaning the streets." He claimed that all these guys are out there killing people." The shooter also claimed that "Yahweh," the Hebrew name for God, would be sending more people to help.
Police also interviewed the suspect's roommates, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. They told investigators that Caricker had been increasingly agitated recently and was constantly wearing a bulletproof vest while carrying a gun.
He was also described by roommates as a "biblical extremist" who also believed people should assist police in protecting their neighborhoods. The suspect was allegedly caught on camera while screaming "battle crimes" as he went about his shooting spree.
Philadelphia Shooting Victims
Caricker's rampage killed five people last Monday, and they have been identified. They are 20-year-old Lashyd Merritt, 29-year-old Dymir Stanton, 59-year-old Ralph Moralis, and Joseph Wamah Jr., 31. The youngest among them is Daujan Brown, who was only 15.
Lashyd Merritt worked as an IRS service representative and was described as an overall good guy by a cousin who spoke to NBC News. Meanwhile, the youngest victim, Daujan Brown, was killed while trying to help a 13-year-old friend who was shot twice in the legs. He was only walking to a store when he was killed, though his friend survived.
Joseph Wamah Jr. was described as an angel by his twin sister, Josephine Wamah. He had a degree in psychology and also loved drawing.
The eldest victim was Ralph Moralis, who was supposed to attend his daughter's wedding on Sunday.
