"Mortal Kombat X" is taking no prisoners. The latest entry in the long-running fighting franchise is an evolution of sorts. The game isn't going to be radically different from predecessors, particularly 2011's "Mortal Kombat," but it isn't going to be a carbon copy, either.

What "Mortal Kombat X" will do is simple, yet complex. It's being designed to be the most brutal fighting simulator ever. Yet the game will still play like a traditional Kombat title, meaning humorous moves and sound effects.

NetherRealm Studios is taking full advantage of the increased graphical fidelity in next-generation platforms like Microsoft Windows 8.1, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game will then be back-ported to older systems like PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The popular X-Ray moves will return, having first appeared in 2011's "Mortal Kombat," but will be retooled. So how does an X-Ray move work? Once your character's energy meter is full, you can unleash a devastating attack onto your opponent.

Old favorites like Raiden and Johnny Cage may not appear in "Mortal Kombat X." Don't fret, though: The full Kombatant list hasn't been announced. New characters will vie for gamers' affection as well, including Cassie Cage, Johnny's good-looking daughter.

Kotal Kahn, a menacing Aztec eagle warrior, also will debut. According to the Mortal Kombat Wiki, Kahn's upper body will be fully tattooed, and those tattoos will glow in a color that changes with the combat variation. The character's creation may have been inspired by Aztec emperor Montezuma.

According to IGN, the other characters that are locks to appear in the game are: Scorpion (a no-brainer), Sub-Zero (ditto), Ferra/Torr (a dual character and newcomer) and D'Vorah (newcomer and human/insect hybrid).

So how good will this game look and play? Unless you opt for an old-generation system, the game will play at 60 frames per second at full HD. The PC title will likely feature even higher resolutions.
