House Republican Chaos Continues: Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks Says She Received Death Threats for Voting Against Jim Jordan
House Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa is crying foul after receiving death threats for not voting for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker, further complicating the Republican infighting as Jordan's Republican opponents accuse the Donald Trump-backed House Speaker candidate of using intimidation tactics to get votes.
On Wednesday, the Republican representative from Iowa stated that she received "credible death threats" after pulling her support from Jordan. She previously voted for Jordan during the first vote but then voted against him during the second vote by casting her ballot for Rep. Kay Granger of Texas.
"Since my vote in support of Chairwoman Granger, I have received credible death threats and a barrage of threatening calls," said Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in a statement. "The proper authorities have been notified and my office is cooperating fully."
For the second vote in a row, Jim Jordan lost, only getting 199 votes while House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York had 212, which was every single Democratic member of the House. Unlike the first vote, however, Jordan lost more votes than he gained, with four flipping to vote against him, including Miller-Meeks.
The Demoine Register reported that the Iowa Republican admitted she voted for Jordan in the first vote "for the greater good of the House Republican Party."
During the second vote, she flipped and stated, "However, after one round of votes, with my support, he was not able to secure enough votes for the speaker nomination, and my initial concerns about threatening tactics of Jim Jordan's supporters, including from members of Congress, increased despite assurances."
Miller-Meeks also noted that her fellow Republicans have stooped to using intimidation tactics to get more votes and called out the other members of her own party, calling them "bullies."
"One thing I cannot stomach, or support is a bully," she stated. "Someone who threatens another with bodily harm or tries to suppress differing opinions undermines opportunity for unity and regard for freedom of speech."
Other House Republicans Speaking Out Against Intimidation Tactics Being Used by Jim Jordan Allies
Ideologically, House Republicans are said to be divided among the moderates and the MAGA Republicans. Moderates have accused the MAGA faction of orchestrating the chaos while the MAGA faction accuses them of being "Republicans In Name Only" or RINOs.

Now, the moderates are seemingly pushing back as the MAGA faction tries to use intimidation tactics to get some votes, according to the Washinton Post. One of these moderates, Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, decried the intimidation and threats his staffers have been receiving, noting that they have been "cussed out, they've been threatened. It's been nonstop. Most of them are out-of-state calls."
Another anti-Jordan holdout, Rep. Kay Granger of Texas, posted on social media that "Intimidation and threats will not change my position."
Meanwhile, Rep. Jen A. Kiggans of Virginia and Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez of Florida also vowed not to give in to the MAGA wing's intimidation tactics.
Jim Jordan Allies' Intimidation Tactics Backfired as Moderate House Republicans Stand Firm
While the intimidation tactics seem to have worked with two of the holdouts, it more or less backfired on the pro-Jordan Republicans as four flipped. As Jim Jordan struggled to get more votes, one of his staunchest Republican opponents explained why.
Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska spoke with the Huffington Post and admitted that his wife received anonymous and vaguely threatening text messages urging him to vote for Jim Jordan. However, Bacon is not backing down.
"They're messing with the wrong guy. I'm not going to be cowed by this stuff," he told the outlet. "I spent 30 years in the Air Force, four deployments. You think a bunch of threats and weird Twitter comments get under my skin?"
Instead of the threats resulting in more votes for Jordan, it instead caused more flips, and experts believe more House Republicans might change sides should this continue.
