A Wisconsin man who was behaving erratically in and around a car repair shop and the parking lot of a suburban Milwaukee school was killed by police officers after a series of dramatic events, authorities revealed on Tuesday.

No students were harmed during the exchange of gunfire, AP reports.

The incident unfolded at approximately 6:30 PM on Monday when officers from the Germantown Police Department responded to reports of a man displaying erratic behavior in the parking lot of Kennedy Middle School.

The individual was also attempting to gain access to the locked school premises, according to a statement by the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Upon the arrival of the officers, the man climbed onto the roof of the school and opened fire at them. In response to the threat, three officers returned fire, ultimately resulting in the man's death.

Approximately 70 students were present in the Wisconsin school at the time, and the facility was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Wisconsin Man's Motive is Unknown

The man in question had no known connections to the school or the local community, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, per WTMJ.

He had been driving a vehicle with out-of-state license plates, which had broken down and led him to a nearby car repair establishment.

His erratic behavior in the parking lot prompted him to attempt entry into Kennedy Middle School.

When his efforts to access the school were thwarted by locked doors, he ascended to the school's roof. Two Germantown police officers pursued him on foot.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice explained, "The subject discharged a firearm at the officers while on the roof, and they returned fire. A third officer also discharged their firearm."

Despite attempts to administer life-saving measures, the suspect did not survive. His identity is being withheld due to an ongoing investigation.

Germantown Chief of Police Mike Snow expressed his belief that this incident was isolated in nature, and in line with protocol, four officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.

Wisconsin School on Lockdown Due to Incident

The incident prompted the immediate lockdown of Kennedy Middle School due to a perceived "school safety threat," which the Germantown School District conveyed to the community via Facebook.

Students and staff in the building, including seventh-grader Samantha Scherdin, were directed to remain quiet during the lockdown. They heard gunshots and commotion from outside.

Eventually, the district arranged for buses to transport the students to a nearby elementary school, with parents required to present identification for pickup, according to the NY Post.

The following morning, the district confirmed that all students, families, and staff members were safe and had been reunited.

Kennedy Middle School remained closed on Tuesday as the Department of Justice continued its investigation.

Once the inquiry concludes, the DOJ will submit a report on the incident to the Washington County district attorney.
