Argentina booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after scoring a hard-earned 1-0 win against Switzerland in their round of 16 showdown on Tuesday at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The Argentina-Switzerland match looked headed to a penalty shootout, but Angel Di Maria had other plans in mind as he netted the game-winner off a feed from Lionel Messi with only two minutes left in extra time.

Blerim Dzemali had a good chance to score an equalizer, but his header from close range hit the left post. He also blew a left-footed follow-up shot, allowing Argentina to escape with the narrow win.

The heavily-favored Argentina squad dominated the possession time for the entire match -- 64 percent to Switzerland's 36 percent -- but they failed to capitalize in the first 118 minutes before Di Maria scored the game winner.

Switzerland goalkeeper Diego Benaglio kept his team in the match with his excellent saves, denying Messi, Di Maria, Rodrigo Palacio, and Pablo Zabaleta goals before being beaten later in the match.

Messi, who has scored four goals in the tournament, had two scoring chances in the match, but he failed to convert. His feed to Di Maria, though, overshadowed his struggles in the match.

With the win, Argentina heads to the quarterfinals, where they will go up against either Team USA or Belgium, who are set to collide Tuesday at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil.
