A Dominican Republic lawyer stated that the victim's mother was allegedly blackmailing the Tampa Bay Rays star with money.

The mother's arrest was reported in several outlets but without details, and she and her daughter have not been named for legal reasons.

Wander Franco, 22, denies the allegations but was arrested earlier this week after missing a meeting with the prosecutor overseeing the case.

The case has gained attention as it involves a potential violation of the Code for the Protection and Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents in the Dominican Republic.

Juan Arturo Recio, a Dominican lawyer and ESPN Deportes editor, revealed that the investigation into Tampa Bay Rays All-Star shortstop Wander Franco is in its preliminary stage and is expected to take several months, Medium reports.

He emphasized Franco's absence of legal representation and suggested that securing legal counsel would be advisable.

"It's vital to grasp that in our laws, there aren't any consensual relationships between a minor and a grownup," Recio said. "There aren't any mitigating components."

The Wander Franco scandal has stirred diverse opinions among Dominicans. Some speculate that the accusations are a result of extortion against a wealthy player, while others believe that the Tampa Bay Rays star may be guilty of the alleged offenses.

Under Dominican law (Law 136-03), any relationships between adults and minors under 18 years of age are strictly prohibited, regardless of consent. Such cases are categorized as sexual abuse, carrying potential sentences ranging from two to five years, along with fines.

There is a possibility that Franco could be released on bail but restricted from leaving the Dominican Republic.

Diaz suggested that Franco's failure to meet with prosecutors might be linked to his anticipation of an imminent arrest.

Reports revealed that authorities searched two of Franco's homes while attempting to locate him.
