Nevada Man Attacks Judge During Sentencing in Las Vegas
A video of a Las Vegas judge being attacked by a Nevada man during his sentencing has gone viral all over the internet in a clear case of assault and battery and attacking a public official.
In the video, Nevada man Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, jumped the bench and attacked Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, forcing her to duck for cover as he started pummeling her.
Court marshals tried to intervene. One was even injured trying to save the judge.
Judge Holthus was reportedly sentencing Redden on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. This was when the three-time felon jumped over the bench and attacked her, according to 8 News Now.
Before his client's reckless attack on the judge, Redden's attorney asked Judge Holthus to only sentence him to probation. However, Redden surprised everyone, including his attorney, when he said, "I think it's time he get a taste of something else," and then jumped the bench to attack the judge.
As the Nevada man attacked the judge, an alarm sounded for several minutes, alerting authorities to the incident, and court marshals soon responded to stop the judge from being harmed even further.
Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus only suffered minor injuries but was not hospitalized, according to Nevada courthouse officials. The felon reportedly grabbed her hair and toppled a US flag as he attacked her.
Las Vegas Courtroom Staffer Hospitalized After Nevada Man Attacked Judge
While Judge Mary Kay Holthus escaped with few injuries, one of the courtroom staffers who tried to help her actually suffered more injuries and was even hospitalized soon after.
According to ABC 7, Redden had to be wrestled from the judge by several court and jail officers and courtroom staff members. Some of those who responded were also seen on video throwing some punches in an effort to save the judge from the attack.
However, during the melee, one of the courtroom marshals needed treatment and was hospitalized after suffering a bleeding gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder.
"It happened so fast it was hard to know what to do," said Chief Clark County District Attorney Richard Scow. He was the one prosecuting Redden for allegedly attacking a person with a baseball bat last year.

The 30-year-old felon now faces 13 counts, including extortion and coercion with force. These include seven new counts that include battery on a protected person, as he did not just attack and injure a judge but also several court officers, according to the Associated Press.
