Idaho police captured two white supremacist gang members linked to two homicides after a prison escape.

Idaho fugitive Skylar Meade, 31, and Nicholas Umphenour, 28, were arrested in Twin Falls.

Umphenour allegedly ambushed guards during Meade's return from hospital to prison, injuring three officers.

Both are Aryan Knights gang members; it is unclear if the escape was gang-sanctioned, according to BBC.

They're suspected of two homicides since Wednesday; shackles were found at one crime scene in rural Idaho.

Meade and Umphenour were caught after a brief car chase driving a victim's Honda Civic.

Meade escaped from a Boise hospital due to self-harm behavior.

Umphenour fired on staff during Meade's transport back to prison.

Umphenour, released earlier this year from the same prison, lived in the same housing unit as Meade, investigators say.

Gunfire Erupts During Transport of Inmate Seeking Medical Treatment

According to IDOC Director Josh Tewalt, on Wednesday, March 20, around 2 AM, the Idaho fugitive, Meade, was taken by ambulance to Saint Alphonsus for self-inflicted wounds on his face and body.

Two IDOC officers accompanied him, with additional armed staff following behind.

When asked by KTVB if Meade harmed himself to escape, an IDOC representative stated, "At this point in the investigation, that appears to be accurate."

As Meade was being prepared for transport back to prison, Nicholas Umphenour, an unknown suspect, fired shots at officers, hitting two, as per BPD, KTVB reports.

BPD officers responded to reports of an active shooter at Saint Alphonsus.

One officer shot at an armed man, later identified as an IDOC employee.

The employee sustained minor injuries. IDOC stated their officers were in uniform during the incident.

Three officers were injured, with one in critical but stable condition, another with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and the third receiving care for minor injuries, BPD reported.

Both individuals were arrested around 2 PM on March 21, each taken into custody separately.

One arrest took place at 2500 North, just east of Curry Crossing, while the other occurred at a residence on North Street in Filer.

Police Link White Supremacist Inmate to Shootings and Homicides

Umphenour, named as the suspected shooter in a police statement on Wednesday, faces charges of aggravated battery against law enforcement and aiding and abetting an escape, CNN noted.

Meade and Umphenour had connections in custody and shared a housing unit at a corrections facility from December 29, 2020, until Umphenour's release on January 17, 2024, according to Tewalt.

Lt. Colonel Sheldon Kelley of the Idaho State Police reported that two homicides are under investigation, potentially linked to the suspects.

The victims, two adult males, were killed separately in Nez Perce County and Clearwater County. Meade's shackles were found at one crime scene, and the suspects had one victim's car.

County coroners will release the victims' identities and causes of death later.

Idaho fugitive Meade, sentenced in October 2016 for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, has numerous prior convictions and is a documented Aryan Knights gang member.

He was scheduled for release in 2036.

The Aryan Knights, primarily based in Idaho, is a white supremacist prison gang, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
