Kari Lake Flipflops Over 1864 Arizona Abortion Law, Calls on Lawmakers to Repeal It after Publicly Supporting Law
Arizona Republicans are facing a ton of backlash after the Arizona Supreme Court approved an 1864 law that was a total abortion ban. One of them was Kari Lake, who now wants to repeal the law she strongly supported before the Arizona Supreme Court decision.
This flip-flopping is not sitting well with both progressives and conservatives, with progressives viewing it as a move to shore up independent voters in the election, while conservatives see this as a betrayal of family values.
According to NBC News, Lake has been making calls to Arizona lawmakers so that she could repeal the pre-statehood era law that bans all forms of abortion unless the mother's life is in imminent danger. This was confirmed by a Republican legislator who spoke about receiving a call from her.
The backlash against the ruling was massive, and many, including Donald Trump and Joe Biden, joined in on the condemnation. This sent many Arizona Republicans scrambling to distance themselves from the law as the 2024 elections draw even closer.
Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego, who ran against Lake, pointed out his opponent's hypocrisy on the matter, posting Lake's previous support for the 1864 total abortion ban that Lake previously said that she supported 100%.
Right now, Republicans hold slim majorities in both the State House and the State Senate. With the issue proving to be pivotal for women across the country, many of these Republicans now find their support diminishing as the election approaches.
As for the Democrats in Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs, who defeated Lake for the seat in 2022, has urged the Legislature to repeal the law. She also said she has been discussing the situation with Republican lawmakers and leadership to repeal the ban.

Kari Lake Praise of 1864 Arizona Abortion Ban Puts Current Position Into Question
Kari Lake, who once called abortion "the ultimate sin," is now backtracking massively as she has shown to be afraid that she might lose some voters in her race against Democrat Ruben Gallego.
In her own words, Lake stated that she was "thrilled" at the prospect of the 1864 Arizona abortion ban being reinstated after Roe V. Wade was repealed by the US Supreme Court.
"I'm incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that's already on the books, I believe it's ARS 13-3603," she said back in 2022, referring to the 1864 abortion ban. "So it will prohibit abortion in Arizona except to save the life of a mother. And I think we're going to be setting the, paving the way and setting course for other states to follow."
Donald Trump Also Flip-Flopped Over Abortion
Lake's flip-flopping position on the controversial Arizona abortion law mirrors that of her biggest ally, former President Donald Trump, who previously bragged about being responsible for overturning Roe V. Wade. That overturn led to the return of the 1864 law, which he is now opposing.
As NBC News pointed out, Trump showed different conflicting stances on abortion in his effort to shore up votes, including embracing states' rights to uphold abortion bans while at the same time distancing himself from a state-based outcome in Arizona while also patting himself on the back for being responsible for the overturn of Roe that led to the return of the law he is trying not to be associated with.
