Edgard Gardy Leblanc Fils, head of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), officially presented Dr. Garry Conille with the decree naming him Haiti Prime Minister at Villa d'Accueil.

The ceremony, attended by political and civil representatives, highlighted Conille's commitment to collaborate with the CPT for Haiti's stability, The Haitian Times reports.

Conille, who toured gang-ravaged Port-au-Prince and visited displaced citizens, marked his second public appearance since his appointment on May 28.

The installation date for Conille's government remains unannounced, with current affairs managed by Michel Patrick Boisvert until Conille assumes office.

Haiti's Crisis and the New Administration

New interim Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille stressed unity within his administration to tackle the country's severe crisis caused by gang wars.

These conflicts have displaced hundreds of thousands, closed major ports, cut off essential supplies, and worsened a food crisis affecting millions.

At his swearing-in event in Port-au-Prince, Conille emphasized the importance of political groups working together for the nation's benefit and highlighted the urgency of their mission.

Conille, previously a UNICEF regional director, steps into the role following Ariel Henry's resignation.

Conille's appointment comes amid significant political instability, according to Reuters.

His predecessor, Ariel Henry, resigned while seeking international support to combat gang violence.

The transition council, comprising various political parties and societal sectors, faced delays due to factional disagreements.

Despite a positive first meeting, Conille acknowledged the challenges ahead.

The council must now form a new cabinet and facilitate the deployment of Kenyan police to stabilize the country.

Notably, business sector representative Laurent Saint-Cyr was absent from the initial proceedings.

Haitian feminist groups criticized the lack of female representation among the council's voting members and candidates for the prime minister role, urging the new administration to include women.

Conille replaces interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, taking on a nation plagued by crises exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse, and escalating gang violence.

Despite these obstacles, there is guarded optimism regarding Conille's leadership, with hopes that it will bring stability and advancement to Haiti.

Conille's Experience and Vision

Garry Conille, the new Haiti Prime Minister, brings significant experience and expertise to his role.

A UN development specialist and UNICEF's regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023, Conille previously served as Haiti's prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012 under then-President Michel Martelly.

His extensive background underscores his qualifications to address the country's challenges, AP News noted.

Conille arrives amid ongoing gang violence in Haiti's capital and beyond. He assumes leadership while awaiting the anticipated UN-backed deployment of a police force from Kenya and other countries, including Jamaica.

The transitional council, aiming to pave the way for elections, named Conille as the new prime minister.

He replaces interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, whom he met upon arrival in Port-au-Prince.

Gang violence remains a severe issue, complicating Haiti's path to stability.

Conille's task is formidable as the country continues to grapple with political instability, natural disasters, and rampant violence.

Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, endures numerous overlapping challenges.

As Conille steps into his role, his leadership and experience offer hope for a more stable and prosperous future for Haiti despite the significant challenges ahead.
