The dust has settled in the Mexico presidential elections of 2024, considered the country's largest election yet. In a landslide victory, Claudia Sheinbaum was elected to succeed her mentor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and we will take a look at her net worth before she even takes office.

Sheinbaum made history as the first female president in Mexico's history, as well as the first one of Jewish descent. This is historic as Mexico has had a history of machismo and preferring male leaders, with a history of gender disparity and violence against women. Mexico is also majority Catholic and electing somebody of Jewish descent is quite historic, especially in Latin America.

Born from a family of intellectuals, as her father, Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz, and mother, Annie Pardo Cemo, were notable scientists. She followed in their footsteps as she also became one, choosing to be a climate scientist and pushing for greener policies in Mexico.

She graduated with a degree in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1989, before getting her master's degree and a PhD in energy engineering by 1995, according to Marca. It was not long before she dipped her toes into politics, though, as she was soon elected as the mayor of the country's capital, Mexico City, where she was mentored by current President AMLO.

As for her Jewish background, Sheinbaum said she never practiced the relifion, nor does she consider herself being Jewish.

BBC listed her at number 70 on the BBC 100 Women list not as a politician, but as a scientist, as she contributed much to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. However, thanks to her connection to the notoriously pro-oil AMLO, many of her fellow climate scientists are now divided over her.

Claudia Sheinbaum as a Politician

Although her achievements as a climate scientist have earned her global renown, she is now more known to be a politician, being AMLO's brightest student in the political arena and mayor of Mexico City. This soon propelled her to the highest office in the land.

As mayor of Mexico City, one of the largest cities on the planet, Sheinbaum invested 40 billion pesos, around $2 billion, to modernize the city. She also contributed to the country's education through her "Mi Beca para Empezar" scholarship program which helped 1.2 million students across Mexico

Despite being close to the big oil-loving AMLO and being accused of being his "clone" in terms of policy, Sheinbaum does differ with him over energy, as she has been pushing for alternative energy sources and greener practices.

How Much is Claudia Sheinbaum's Net Worth Before She Becomes President?

As the mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum earned between 200,000 pesos a month, with her annual salary being over $134,000. Throughout the years, she has had a very successful career in politics, academia, and environmental advocacy, according to WibliqX.

As for her net worth, it is estimated to be between 5 - 10 million dollars thanks to her extensive career across various fields.
