A three-alarm fire erupted on Monday at the Florida Apartment, Temple Court in Miami, coinciding with a shooting incident that left one man critically injured.

The complex, located at 431 NW 3rd Street, became a scene of chaos as firefighters battled the blaze and rescued over 40 residents, many of whom were elderly, CBS News reports.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez reported receiving multiple calls about the fire around 8:15 AM.

Emergency responders found a Florida man on the third floor suffering from gunshot wounds, who was immediately transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Shooting and Blaze Engulf Florida Apartment Complex

The Temple Court Apartments in downtown Miami faced a dual crisis Monday morning when a man was shot, and a fire broke out, prompting a massive rescue operation.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from a third-floor window of the four-story building.

According to Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll, the fire rapidly spread through the complex, necessitating a defensive approach to contain it.

The situation escalated to a three-alarm fire, requiring extensive resources to manage.

Rescue efforts were intensive, involving over 126 firefighters working eight hours to extinguish the flames.

The building's common attic facilitated the fire's rapid spread, complicating containment efforts, The New York Times noted.

Residents, including elderly individuals and those with limited mobility, were evacuated amidst the chaos.

Miami Fire Rescue confirmed that three firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation but were discharged in stable condition.

Additional medical attention was provided to a resident for smoke inhalation and to others for injuries sustained during the evacuation.

Suspect in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

By Monday afternoon, authorities had apprehended a suspect connected to the shooting and fire.

The identity of the suspect and details linking the incidents remain under investigation, according to the Miami Herald.

Mayor Suarez emphasized that ensuring the safety and well-being of residents displaced by the Florida fire is a top priority.

Atlantic Housing Management, overseeing Florida Apartment, Temple Court, expressed sorrow over the incidents and pledged support to the affected residents.

Efforts are underway to provide temporary shelter, meals, and necessary supplies for those displaced by the blaze.

Residents and officials expressed shock and concern over the magnitude of the fire, which Mayor Suarez described as the first three-alarm blaze in Miami in 25 years.

The Red Cross set up a shelter at Jose Marti Park to assist displaced residents, offering essentials and support services.

The Temple Court Apartments, built in 1920, are home to a diverse community of tenants, many of whom rely on the building's affordable housing options.

The incident has raised questions about building safety and emergency preparedness in older structures.

As investigations into the cause of the Florida fire and shooting continue, Miami remains focused on supporting the Temple Court community in its recovery.
