Boxing News 2014: Erislandy Lara Wants to Prove He Is Better Than Canelo Alvarez
Erislandy Lara will have arguably the biggest fight of his career when he collides with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Lara, who is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Austin Trout in December last year, has been lobbying for a fight against Alvarez.
And now that he finally got the chance to face the Mexican boxing star, Lara vowed to prove that he is better than Alvarez, saying that beating Canelo means a lot to him.
"Beating Canelo means everything to me," Lara said via BoxingScene. "For me to demonstrate to the world that I'm not just better than him, but that I'm 150 percent better than him, means everything to me. Like I said before, I'm going to take him to Cuban school."
Lara also said that he is confident that Alvarez will be in a lot of trouble in their upcoming showdown, pointing out that the former light middleweight had success before because he went up against smaller and older foes.
Lara reiterated that Alvarez failed to live up to expectations when he fought skilled fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Trout before, while also insisting that the Jalisco, Mexico, native is all hype.
"Canelo is arrogant and an inflated boxer," Lara said. "I really don't like him for his character, in addition to him being inflated. But it's not something that's personal. He doesn't realize what kind of trouble that he's going to have when he faces me. I am superior to Canelo Alvarez in every area."
The 31-year-old Lara has been throwing verbal jabs to Alvarez over the past several weeks and Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya believes that it will make the upcoming fight a lot more interesting.
"It's going to be a great fight, I don't want to predict anything," De La Hoya said. "Lara has been doing a lot of trash talking that has been fueling Canelo. I see him at an entirely different level and it's exactly where he should be. He's at a level of determination where he really wants to get this guy. It's personal."
In a recent interview, Alvarez also vowed to go all out, saying that the upcoming fight is 'personal' because he wants to make Lara pay for his disrespectful acts over the past several weeks.
