Verrazano Bridge Carjacking & Shooting: Officials Open Fire at Suspected Carjacker; Where Did He Go?
Gun fire erupted on New York's City's Verrazano Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island, on Monday.
Police opened fire on a reportedly stolen 2006 black Hummer near the bridge's toll plaza around 1:30 a.m. Monday, CBS 2 reported.
The MTA said it received notice to look out for a Hummer that had been involved in an armed carjacking before it was spotted heading toward Staten Island on the upper level of the bridge.
Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) police tried to flag down the car, but the driver allegedly refused to stop for the toll plaza, a MTA spokesperson said.
When the two TBTA cops approached the SUV, a female passenger got out and the male driver sped away, almost mowing down the officers, who fired four shots at the car, sources said. The woman was arrested and turned over to the New York Police Department. The man, however, charged through the toll plaza before eventually abandoning the car and fleeing on foot a short time later.
"He tried to run the cops down. It was like a scene out of a movie," a source told the New York Post.
Authorities later found the vehicle parked by the corner of Targee Street and Narrows Road. It is believed that the driver may have ran into a wooded area.
Fortunately, authorities reported that no one was injured by the gunfire on the bridge or during the armed carjacking, which police say took place Sunday morning around 6 a.m. on Holland Avenue.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Tyree Brown, allegedly walked up to a 29-year-old man and pulled out a gun and demanded money. Brown then made the man lie on the ground before taking off in his Hummer, police said.
Police are still searching for Brown, who is described as an African-American man around 5-foot-8 and weighs about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red-hooded jacket and tan pants.
